They use  '1ft rollout' to massage the figures, but the Tesla is still pretty quick for a milk float. But why does it need to sound like a milk float? :-\

You want accelleration ? - Two wheels and a 1 litre 180bhp engine is whats required.  :)
Mmm, summers coming. I must try to resist.  :'(

Old bones and tarmac don't make a good mix. ;) 200 BHP and less than 200 KG is more the norm these days.

That and the need to keep my licence is why I must try to resist. It ain easy after 40 years in the saddle though.  ;)

Kevin. I have to say I have never associated gliders with stomach churning acceleration.

Serenity and mindful contemplation yes. Drag strip acceleration no. :

Your Westfield must be pretty quick out of the blocks until it runs into an aerodynamic wall.

Well, you should try a winch launch some time.  ;)

340 kg glider + pilot at one end of the runway, 502 ci V8 at the other. :D

Yes, the Westfield is "adequate", I'd say.  :y

502 cubic inches is about eight and a bit litres by my reckoning. :o

At roughly what speed does a glider leave the ground using that method and how long does it take?

It's probably off the ground by 40 knots.

Watch the video:

1:58 Glider starts rolling
2:01 ASI reads 40 knots. Off the ground.
2:02 ASI reads 50 knots.
2:04 60 knots.

60 knots = 70 MPH

2:40 Launch finishes at 1300 feet - not spectacular. I suspect it's a shortish airfield. Still nearly 2000 feet per minute, though.

That's a 2 seater glass glider with 2 POB, too, so probably double the weight.

Granted, I don't know what the wind was doing that day so the glider might be climbing into a wind gradient which would enhance the indicated air speed versus ground speed. Having said that, there's significant lag on the instrument's response too, which probably cancels it.

I have fond memories of both winch launches and the occasional "cable break" which always gave a bit of a buzz ::)

Did all that malarkey for my annual check a couple of weeks back.. Unlike the video I wasn't camouflaged and I called the instructor things... but "Sir" wasn't one of them. ;)
