I dislike derv......but.
« on: 24 March 2017, 11:26:54 »

I was highly impressed with a documentary on the television yesterday evening. The diesel lump in question was the 'Deltic' used in state of the art locomotives built in the early sixties.

It seems the Deltic had two cylinders sharing the same bore. These were set in the shape of a triangle giving 6 cylinders. Six of this configuration was then joined together giving a 36 cylinder (I think) diesel engine, taking up a relatively small space.

As far as I can see the Deltic diesel was only produced for a couple of years. Not sure why.

As an ex-spotty nerdy trainspotter in my youth  ;D I remember the Deltic, I never knew much about the technicalities, but I do remember that they were bloody huge things, and very imposing.

I think that should be two pistons sharing the same cylinder.

I still cannot get my head around it, but any 18 cylinder lump with 18 superchargers gets my vote 8)

Do you think that engine in the last clip would pass an emissions test?

Yes - judging by that last clip, Euro 6 emissions compliance might have been a problem. :-\

Also used in boats. Trains and boats - both vehicles in which the combustion of diseasel is acceptable. :y

Certainly would with a VW tester.

Yes, that would be the software hack that shuts down both Deltics and plays the characteristic exhaust note through a very large P.A. system until out of sight.  ;)

Oh, and they'd have to find a way of making it necessary for the whole front of the loco to come off to service the engine.  ::)

Yes, the sound of a Deltic at full power is a dream, even for a hardened steam engine enthusiast as myself.

and to prove they are still loved and exist here are five of them together (there is one more in preservation):

enjoy! :-* :-* 8)
