3.2 vs 3.0 timing kit difference?
« on: 09 April 2017, 17:01:30 »

I remember reading that the parts fit on either engine but why are they sold as different when the physical engine is pretty much the same on the outside apart from lower guide pulley?

There is a big difference in price here for 3.0 vs 3.2.

Also they seem to ask for engine number for different kits but again, why? What is so different about them?

There were some differences in the pulley layout and eventually the lower adjustable pulley was replaced by a fixed one on the later 3.2s and 2.6s.

The differences are all taken up in changes to the ali mounting casting that holds the upper idler and tensioner pulleys, and the bottom idler pulley which may or may not be adjustable so you can fit any kit to any V6 provided:

You re-use your existing ali casting if the one in the kit is not the same.
You accept that you might end up with an adjustable lower pulley when you didn't have one before.

If looking for a 3.2 kit, it's certainly worth buying an earlier kit instead, as they are significantly cheaper.

Thank you!

Out of curiosity, why do the timing kits come with that new mount casting?

EDIT: I had a look at the pics and it seems the newer kit has the static lower pulley while the old kit has adjustable lower pulley like you said and the casting seems to have small differences in the looks atleast.
