As others will no doubt point out, he had the 1.9 diesel, not the newer 2.0 - That article is a few years old, be interesting to see how well he got on.

He must have been doing big miles each year!

Maybe....but its still impressive that with no breakdowns it managed 500k.....but I think a bit of economy of the truth of the service of it I reckon....no mention of exhausts/brake pads/disks/etc but then they are all serviceable parts anyway  :y

I totally agree. Truth is that VW are no more reliable than any other car - despite what their marketing people might like you to believe.......

Eh? Don't paint everything with same brush. Especially as you drive a Mondeo  :)

Which I do and openly prefer it to VW products in the same market segment. My choice, yours is VW, mine isn't - simples. VW have been proven not to be trustworthy & contribute zero to U.K plc in terms of manufacturing or r&d jobs - which Ford certainly do. That's my opinion.

You do know who owns Bentley right? I mean at Crew they make:

Bentley Mulsanne
Continental Flying Spur
Continental GT
Continental GTC   Bentleys

Used to make:

Arnage
Azure
Brooklands

It's also their HQ, main R&D site and where they are all hand made and hand-crafted.... so yeah VW do nothing for the UK!

VW own Bentley, agreed, but the VW brand itself doesn't have any UK contribution - does it?

Not to mention that the Mondeo has a much more capable chassis than a Passat. ::)

Rolls Royce is owned by Bmw, and all they do is hand make some posh bling which gets added to the lego 7 Series... The shells of which come over from Germany ready for paint... Can't see Vws approach to Bentley being much different ::)

Fords, VW's, Vauxhall, Hyundai's.......all much of a muchness for the average driver. They are all capable of doing what most people want them to do. It's only when you start driving hard that you'll notice the small differences between them, and most people don't.

Trying to figure out if you are serious?  :-\

I was going to go into VW car sales, VAT contributions and so on but cannot be bothered.

But I will mention that your Ford was made in Spain.

Ford shut Southampton Transit production and moved it to Turkey.
Ford ended UK car production in 2002, leaving just engines made here.
Cars built in Euroland and shipped here. (yours)

I'd put a bet on Brexit completion, Ford move last of their two production sites out of the UK  :y

What he said.

Which is why most manufacturers have to compete in the "adding pointless gadgets to your car" stakes. Ultimately, I reckon you're best off picking the one with the comfiest seat :P

Hence the CC, tried Merc and quite a few others. Really liked CC's seats, I like Ford Max seats as well  ::)
