One for the computer wizzards.
« on: 31 July 2008, 19:54:34 »

What is the cheapest way of getting an internet connection on my laptop away from home. :-[

I don’t want to be sitting outside a MacDonald’s etc, I want to connect from my Caravan.

I believe there are hand held devices, I don’t want this, I want to be able to use the laptop.

There is a signal within the main complex but this is too far from my caravan so was wondering;

What sort of deals through mobile, I am on a bacic annual contract with 02?
I have heard you can get a plug in from Orange?
I have heard that there are boosters that I can use to increase the range of the laptop so that I could get a signal from the complex.

What is the best way to get online, please provide any help in easy to understand language, nothing to technical.   ::)

"Soap on a rope" 3G modems - the one from three (3) is about the cheapest, from £10/month IIRC.  If you buy the modem (free on contract) for £50 (but not directly from 3...), it's £10 for 30 days PAYG...top up when needed.

Must explain - it's actually a USB modem and is literally plug and play.  Used one the other day, but its about the same size as a small bar of soap and has a small cable with it...

You do need to do a little Data enabling registration for your £10 topup, or its gets swallowed up at £1/Mb.  IF enabled, then you get 1Gb - 100 times more internet...  Details are on the three website.

i got a usb modem from t-mobile. cost me £24 a month but got unlimeted downloads. speed is comparable to broadband on an average day but can be slower than dial up on a bad day.

As others have said go for an internet dongle...ive had 3 network on contract since last august pay £15 and that allows 3 gig on downloads.

Considering im using mine for roughly 25/26 days a month at near on 12 hours a day either surfing the net or playing online poker i still dont use my full allowance.

You can go PAYG as previous stated...simply buy a dongle from 3 network £50 and only pay for what you use.

Most mobile networks have these dongles...its just a case of finding who has a strong signal where your caravan is based and then choosing a price plan.

Isn't it a bit of catch 22?  The onyl way i found to find which 3G signals are available in an area is to use a 3g dongle..?  We have a Vodafone 3g dongle at work for when we are on site (corporate one, so worldwide)..the only 3g signal we can't get AT work is Vodafone!  Orange, 3, O2, T-Mobile, all fine...  Bit of a pain when I trying out a remote access idea for some of our equipment on site for which i really needed a quick bandwidth.

Saying that...my phone (Nokia N82 on Orange) shows 3g on the signal meter if i'm in an Orange 3g area.

Caravan sites are either one of t'other - on the flat, so probably have line of sight to a transmitter, or stuck in the hills, so no chance!

Now that I find myself having joined the ranks and become a weekend Pikey (albeit the touring 'van is on a seasonal pitch for this year) I would also like to investigate such a thing.  She is happy that I am prised away from the PC when along at the 'van but I am getting withdrawal symptoms!!     ;D

Just re-read your post a bit more...might be worth talking to O2 and see if they can do you a data package with your phone -plug it in with a cable, and off you go?  If you find a good data tarrif for new customers, badger them to let you have it on your contract instead of your normal one..
