Regular Oil Changes
« on: 04 August 2008, 07:39:06 »

Following recommendations from OOF`ers; I radically-shortened the service interval for oil and filter changes of my 2.5 (currently 184,000+ miles).
The last three oil & filter changes have been at 1000 mile intervals and this has made a BIG difference to the sound of the running engine: `so much quieter and it`s completely lost that worryingly 'tappety' morning rattle. (which I might add, had been wrongly diagnosed by a garage as a blowing exhaust gasket!)

It goes to show that, even with my 'high-mileage' engine; the simple job of the regular removal of circulating sludge/carbon and replacing with clean oil can make a real difference.

its a known fact that engines run far longer with very regular oil changes, the latest cars with stupid oil change limits of 20,000 miles etc is only a manufactures gimmick cos they know the engines will not last the life of the car, so they sell more engines!!!
as an aside my old 1981 V8 rover sdi did 287000 miles with oil changes every 3000, and was still running beautifully when it was sold,
the guy rang me up and ask why the engine was so quiet compared to his mates SDI , and it was quicker(didnt tell him it had ported heads and a hot cam)
so well done Debs you should now be able to go to 3k oil changes no problem as all the crap will have been flushed out of her now!! :y

aye 3-4000 changes here, does keep em running nice, esp if you do shortish journeys, hard to whinge with the price being under a tenner on trade card. (obviously more if doing more than just oil / filter)

Heard someone once say if a service makes a difference to a car, you have left it too late!

Agree with all of the above  :y
My last three oil changes have been at 2000 miles, or less, intervals and you can hardly hear her running, even from cold  8-)

Now that the oil is coming out clean, that may be a little excessive.  Certainly won't do any harm (assuming you don't break anything whilst doing it ;D) :y

Think its actually closer to 1.5k miles depends what i do at weekends.

Its staying clear and clearer with every change, its been about 2 months since the last one, really need to invest in a new oil tray.

Virtually the same, unless some cowboy has overtightened it.

Do it asap, so you have a base to start from.

Finished with Headunit - without the code, its no good to me.

Headunit works, single slot cd goes through the motions of playing a disc now.  It can also read a satnav disk, didn't have a gps unit handy to fully test.  CDC does not work, I think it needs a new vertical board in it to overcome CDC SAFE msg.

The other stuff, not much left of other headunit, so I'll keep for spares.  The other CID I can't get to go either.
