Interesting car for a week .....
« on: 13 May 2017, 08:44:21 »

I'm off to Aberdeen for a work visit this week. As the pool car is busy I've hired a car, which turns out to be a BMW 116d M Sport - brand spanking new  :y.

Turns out the car has quite an interesting engine, a 1.5 litre, 3 cylinder unit - promising decent fuel economy. Good impressions so far, it's not a flying machine for sure but isn't a slouch either. I've only done 20 miles in it, but this will be over a grand by this time next week.

I'll report back .......

I've driven one, it's a bit of a hoot because you can rag it all the time. Mid range it's quite flat though, but it means you can floor it everywhere.  ;D

We spanked it everywhere for 3 days, still gave 45 mpg.

Ah, a car originally designed to be a FWD Rover 35.

The original R30 supposedly sits in the basement of BMW's Munich office. Shame Rover never got to put it into production, though in fairness BMW had to convert it for RWD use and look how many you see on the road now - I bet the Rover version wouldn't have sold half as well due to their limited badge appeal compared to BMW..... now where have we seen that story before?  ::) ;D

I've discovered the Jeckel/Hyde switch  :y

Sits next to the gear lever & has a number of settings. Sport makes it "fly"' "ECO" gives it the good mpg. Speaking of which, I averaged 58 on the way up here today - which is about 6 more than the Mondeo would do being driven in the same way. No cruise control through, hey ho!

I nearly got thrown out of a dealership after answering what's wrong with it? with The adventure was a bit much for it. The grovelling I did to get the paperwork signed meant I 'forgot' to tell them that oil was leaking out of the hole that a conrod had smashed in the crankcase ::)

Now here's the weird thing, no cruise but it does have a speed limiter!

Go figure!

Ok, just got back .....

Overall MPG was 58, which was ok.

Sports seats were "too tight" - i.e. I'm too fat for them, only just though  :(

Great performance in sport mode, you really would never know it's a 3 pot!

Only real gripe was tyre noise, but am not sure if that's down to the run-flats - but I really noticed the reduction in noise going back to the Mondeo.

Would I buy one, probably not - the cabin is just too snug for me .....

What does that mean in Tunnie-speak? ::)

Well we averaged mid 30's mpg, compared to LR's 58 mpg in above post  8)

I also had it sideways a couple of times, run flats don't grip that well  :D

The joy of youth - sounds like the sort of thing I would have done a few years ago!
