Geocaching

Some will know what geocaching is or not

In geocaching you can 'release' travel bugs which other cachers move to other caches....and so it goes on...

I released one called HollyDog.....altho the original went missing I released another one....

The 'new' one has been moving about for over 6 years and recently asked for it back....which ive just received this week  :)

In the time HollyDog has been moving around.....she's travelled nearly 51k miles  :)

See linky if interested at all.....you can view the map to see where she's been  :)

Alternatively, a decent form of exercise that takes you to some interesting places. I don't do it (too fat, lazy and occasionally busy). But I have friends who do  :y

Which is why I started, esp at lunchtime at work, as it forces me to go out for a walk (and quite a brisk walk due to the time constraints).

I noticed from the activity on my caches, popularity has dropped off a cliff since they stealthily changed the charging model.

New caches will create more interest and popularity will drop as cachers near the cache, find it.
For example, I have a cache that was very popular a few years ago, now it only gets found about every 6 months or so, usually by a cacher visiting the area.

Whats the charging model difference now?

When I signed up  for premium membership (which you don't have to, but does limit you somewhat) I was getting charged $10/quarter and still am. I know they changed it to £10/quarter for UK membership, so I save about £3/quarter on the membership, but then my bank charges me about 70p for a $ transaction, but whether its $ or £ its hardly a biggie.......don't know of any other changes  :-\

we have problems with geocashers on local farms, they insist on trespassing, we found 3 of them standing in the wood next to a pheasant pen the other year,

What the F*** is this all about. I have a hard time keeping up with real life, doing what I really need to do on a day-to-day basis, without some not real but it's out there stuff. I don't want to hear about about how hard people are finding things.

Indeed... A bit of an unnecessary comment really.

Without Premium, its now unusable.

Up until recently, you could pay a charge for app and see all non-premium caches. Now the app is free, but to use the app for all but easiest caches, you need premium.  Granted, you could, if you're organised enough, print them off from the website at home, but most of my caching was always spontaneous.

Around the time this happened, I saw the drop off in activity on my caches, and notice hardly any new ones are popping up.

Obviously, Groundspeak need to make money to pay for the service, but I worry that they might have overcooked it.

I notice they changed mapping provider a while back, I wonder if the new default one is more expensive  :-\

Also, on iOS, the new (free) app is so hard to use compared to the, now defunct, old (paid) app.
