Shark fin aerial..

Has anyone fitted one of these type of aerials?
Are they any good?

To do what?

Saloon has radio aerial in rear heater element, estates are proper aerials on roof (and hard to beat).

GPS antenna is on roof on all cars (with GPS), except MFL where its under dash.

Phone equipped or phone prewired cars have 1/4 wave cellular antenna on roof, again hard to beat.

Sharkfin is always a compromise.

Unrelated, but I have no idea where the aerials are in my new ride. Presumably the AM/FM/DAB and TV aerials are in the heater elements, no idea about GPS.  Having nothing external certainly gives it clean lines...

Just as a replacement for the roof aerial on my estate.
All the new cars I see including the Vauxhalls seem to have them & they look a bit more modern than the traditional kind. I'm an avid radio listener & don't want to jeopardise the quality of the signal if I use one. My current aerial is broken because of the rear spoiler on the boot.

If you want the best FM reception quality, stick with the standard estate one :y

The aerial on my estate had the phone aerial built into it as well.
One day, someone decided to nick it....I had a difficult job trying to replace it (apart from paying a silly price for one from VX) as it had a different screw thread to most screw in aerials (presumably so you could only screw the correct type of aerial in)

I found a replacement in PoundWorld, iirc, came with a selection of screw threads, one of which fitted  :y
Obviously I lost the phone aerial part .. but I wasn't bothered about that ...

They could be bloody anywhere. The FM on the Swede is in the rear bumper o/s corner. There is a similar enclosure on the n/s with nothing in it on mine (gps maybe? - I don't have nav). Only found out when I nearly pulled the damn plug off removing the oppsing bumper.  ::)

I've got the workshop manual, I'm sure it must be in there somewhere, but that sounds like effort to read it...

I could ask on a Jag forum, but been fairly unsuccessful with simple queries so far, so I suspect any reply will be to book it in at a Jag Dealer.

Yes, I had noticed that until jags hit about 10yrs old, the accepted repair procedure for most things seems to be to drive to your nearest jaguar main dealer and throw the keys and your wallet at the first person you see.

DTV aerials go one either side in same location if fitted, suspect 'missing' one is GPS ;)

Incidentally, there's alot of official factory accessory fitting instructions readily available online for Volvos... tow bars, RSE, DTV etc ;)

Stick with the original Estate Whip, the Sharks Fin on Factory fit are well designed and are matched to the Roof Line and internal Amp etc. The cheapo after thought S Fins are utter crap you would  be better off using a paper clip.

Wouldn't a paper clip look a bit silly, even sillier than a wire coat hanger?  ???

Cheers, will take a look. SWMBO fancies a tin tent so I suspect at least the tow battle will be going on shortly  ::)
