When I worked in a drug detox unit leg cramps were a major symptom of Heroin Withdrawal and as mentioned earlier we prescribed Quinine with very good effect, your GP should be able to prescribe it as it was a Malerial treatment.  I think it was a build up of lactic acid in the muscles that caused it

Lactic acid? As in milk? I don't drink a lot of that and obviously I have never been on Heroin or any drugs. Well, maybe caffeine; I can't do without my coffee!

Thanks for the feedback guys - much appreciated.

I've also read that magnesium supplements can help - so am trying that as well. If no improvement from that & the tonic water I might visit the doc. It's the same muscle (calf) that I had the DVT in 7 months ago - but am pretty sure that's coincidence as I had cramps in that leg on & off way before the DVT incident.

Exercise might also help... Ever thought about taking up cycling? :-X

 ;)

I got cramp while pedaling my bike once, nearly flipped over the bars as my calf basically froze and locked in straight position :)

Unfortunately, I suffer from cramp, especially in the summer months. Lower calf cramps occasionally, but foot cramp regularly, most often, but not exclusively in bed. I can no longer go swimming as foot cramp kicks in very quickly. The same applies when climbing ladders, Once I get foot cramp it is very difficult to get rid of as soon as you stop stretching the muscles & tendons, it returns and locks up my foot (& at times feet) again. :( :( :( This at times can go on for an hour or more. :( :( :(

I just put up with it as one of those things, but any solutions that would help greatly appreciated? :y :y :y

Mentioned at local surgery and all I've had to date from doctors and nurses is rolled eyes that make G20 Merkel look like an amateur! >:( >:( >:(

That's an appallingly dismissive attitude on the part of your healthcare professionals, Rods. I have an appointment with my GP later this morning, so I'll ask him about it.

I get foot cramp now and again and it's a bugger to get rid of as you can't stretch your foot out enough, so I end up in a painful battle to stop the muscles turning my foot into a claw!  :(
