LED floodlights
« on: 08 August 2017, 12:47:35 »

Any experiences?

I've just had to replace a 120watt bulb in one and noticed that LED fittings seem to be coming down in price.

I've replaced virtually all the bulbs in the house with LED ones, but had a hell of a job getting the right power size for replacing wall lights - of which we have quite a few.

Am wondering how a 10 or 20 watt LED floodlight compares with a 120watt halogen.

I had one fitted to front of the house, think it's only 10w or something. But it flood lights the front part of the driveway nicely!

Sparky replaced my knackered halogen with an LED unit at the back of my house. It is very, very bright and throws its glare much further than the halogen unit.

Dependent on what your layout is, careful adjustment may be required so as not to bother neighbours, they are that bright.

Had that with the guy across the road, he put a new light up with a non- adjustable PIR. He also has an absolute pride of cats so the bloody thing was on and off most of the time, shining into our lounge and bedroom. Got pished off with it after a while and had a chat so he stuck a bit of duct tape over the sensor as he is too lazy to move it. ;D. So far, so good. :y

Fitted two of these to a block of flats and brightness wasnt a problem. Beam spread is also good. As mentioned , they need to be angled correctly to stop nuisance. Local neighbours 3-400metres complained about the brightness so they had to be angled down a fair bit.

I put up two of them out the back. They are extremely good. I have a 10W and a 20W up and they light up the area very well. No replacing the led unit, though, when it goes it's a new light.

According to bro the sparky, the cheaper ones (screwfix and similar "consumer" type places) do degrade faster over time, and although "bright" seem to lack the "illumination"/detail of the more expensive ones, or of halogen style ones.

BUT, they are cheap, and more reliable than halogen, so buy one, when it's illumination is poor, replace. That's his recommendation.

If you need the illumination, rather than just lighting up an area, then halogen might be better.

This is the one I bought. You can get much cheaper ones, but this was to replace like for like:

When I say unit, I mean a new lamp. Mine is 50watt and cost just over £45. When it lights up, it's as close to daylight as you can get at night. A very bright, blue tinge light.
