Anyone clued up on Nokia"s
« on: 07 August 2008, 01:53:04 »

Basicly ive just bought (waiting for delivery) a Sim Free BNIB Nokia N95 8 gig With Maps & 12month Voice Guidance New Red Edition.

Has anyone got one of these or know much about them in day to day use.

The satnav with built in gprs looks very handy...would installing TomTom be a better option.?

The Nokia maps only seems to want to go to a road and house number (i.e. it doesn't recognise Heathrow Terminal 4..), and the address search is a bit "pish".  Only had a 30 day trial with mine...then loaded my TomTom onto it.  BTW you can't use the inbuilt GPS receiver with TomTom.

Not seen any POIs for it either  :-/

Apparently works well if you're walking in big towns/cities.

There is now a patch that makes TomTom use the internal gps. PM me for more info.
This isn't a hacked version of tomtom but 2 programes that you install to your N95 that makes it think that the internal gps is a bluetooth one.

Expect the phone to crash a lot - its pretty buggy, and the handset itself seems to suffer reliability issues.

Nokia do seem to have gone out of their way to get a massive feature set on it, at the expense of non of it being much cop.

I have one.  Update to Maps v2, its a big improvement.  I now use it as my main nav.

Not had any problems with it crashing? did re-flash the firmware to version 20.0.015 as soon as I got it though.

Camera is a bit disappointing, seems to suffer with compression loss issues?

Wireless works well.  3G works well.

Bluetooth keyboard makes internet browsing / word power point and excel useable

Realplayer / flash player are useful, as is Adobe PDF viewer.

Handset does feel a bit flimsy.

All in all, nice bit of kit.

the built in GPS receiver on the N95 is rubbish, you will prob need to get a external bluetooth unit if you want any kind of decent signal in the phone.

Battery lift is just about ok. 8Gb N95 is an improvement on the first N95.

Lots of features, but crash happy.

Blimey sounds a mixed bag...too be be fair it was an impulse buy and i dont many of the features will get used as it will be a day to day phone/text.

Upgrading too tom tom would be superb and even better if it would run off the internal receiver.

I guess if i did load tom tom then id loose the nokia maps ? only ask it comes with a years subs included.

Tom Tom would be installed as a seperate application so can't see you losing the maps.  I personally love the N range of phones but do know what people are saying about them being buggy.  Easiest way to combat this is to make sure you don't fill the phone memory and set text messages and the like to be saved in the memory card.

Also make sure you have the most recent software update as others have mentioned.

Nokia website.  Here's the link for the Nokia 95 8gb.  Download PC suite first (link on the page) then once in PC suite there will be an option to update the software.  You will need the cable to connect it to the computer not bluetooth.  Make sure your battery is charged and don't knock the cable while updating the software or you can wreck your phone.  Also back up your software first (there will be an option in the update process).

I have the original N95 and the sat nav if you don't use it that often is fine it will get you from A-B but if you want to use it day in day out get a proper Sat Nav.
The phone itself is fairly reliable but battery life is a bit of a pain, ensure you buy an in car charger if you use the sat nav.
The camera is awesome (see the photos of my miggy in the gallery) I took them with it.
I would ensure you update the firmware before you do anything with it.
The N-Gage stuff for games is quite good but I recommend 2 sites for ringtones /games/programs

http://www.mobile9.com/ and http://www.mobiles24.com/

I am currently awaiting the arrival of the N96 onto the UK market and will upgrade to that :D

In my experience simply not the case??  Never ever had any issues with reception.  Maps V2 uses network connection to provide a rough location as well.
