Accessing email with a MacBook
« on: 02 September 2017, 13:37:48 »

I've been given a MacBook Air.  :y  Totally not something that I was expecting. I'm really impressed so far - except in can't access my BT internet/Yahoo email for some reason - other than  via a web browser that it.

The Mail wizard gets me to Gmail fine, but BT fails to connect - well, it tries and I get a message from other devices I'm using saying that access from a new OS X device occurred at the correct date/time etc, just no emails come through.

Any ideas on where I start to solve this? I understand I'm using IMAP rather than POP email - although don't know what either means :-[.

Look for a better mail client, as the supplied OSX one is midway between shite and shocking.  Even if you do actually get it to connect, it has too many horrible glitches.

On my stupid MacBook pro, I have totally given up with email on it, due to the nasty way the email client repeatedly sends out repeat meeting invites every time you view an appointment.

Though, TBH, its such a useless sack of shite, I've pretty much given up on it completely.  Its a device, like all Apple products, for men who wish they were women ;)

Not Outlook, as that's really only suitable for Exchange mail servers.

A quick search on BT's help pages shows you are not alone.  Have a flick through them, and see of the many suggestions works for you.

Personally, I'd suggest flogging it, and getting a real laptop ;)

Thanks for the pointer - a quick Google & ive downloaded a free mail client which worked first time - so I'm happy.

I have to say that I quite like using a machine which is usable within seconds of power-up & then doesn't spend masses of time doing updates every couple of weeks. I have a recent HP W10 machine that I use for work & am used to an unproductive period at the start of the day whilst I sorts itself out. I've been using Windows PCs for almost 30 years and find the new machine almost refreshing to use.

I'll forgive your anti-apple views, thanks for your help.

That's funny TB ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I'd love an explanation of that statement though.  Does it mean us women have lesser needs in the computing compartment?  Careful how you answer that or is it all part of your cull? ::) ::) ;D ;D ;)

Glad you're sorted Lincs Robert :y.

There is something wrong with your Windows machine if it boots slower than a Mac. My 10yr old £300 HP, from cold power on, is at logon prompt in 11s.  My £2600 brand new MacBook Pro is 15s.  Additionally, despite what you may have read or heard, the Mac needs regular security updates AND it DEFINITELY needs antivirus. I use the freebie Avira anti virus on my Mac.

The actual boot up is quick enough, but I'm then assuming it goes off & loads Outlook & Skype. It must be a good couple of mins before it's usable.

Maybe you have a lot of programs installed on it.....more stuff installed, slower boot time ime.....

My netbook is quick enough at booting and usable tho haven't timed it....but it is 5 secs slower than it used to be, as I had to turn off 'fast boot' to fix a problem it was having on shutting down.....

Sounds like it needs some lurvin' ;)

Unless your mail server is an Exchange backend, you should *NEVER* be using Microsoft Outlook. Ever.

A MacBook is too bloody heavy for Opti - it would hurt far to much if he got in the way
