One reason why the perception is different from the reality is mapping. On maps, even the Ordnance Survey ones, roads are vastly overdrawn, because if they were mapped to scale, they would be so small as to be invisible!
So, we are not concreting over our beautiful land with roads, but once again the motorist gets the blame.

We were talking about this on a conf call earlier, following my comments about Ipswich being a shithole (to a mainly Ipswich audience), and they gleefully claimed their area was 83% farm/natural.

I looked mine up, 94%. Opps.

The rural farmland areas not far from Ipswich are quite pleasant. Doesn't alter the fact that Ipswich is indeed a shithole.  ;D
Same with most towns & cities I suppose.
