Cam kit & water pump on V6
« on: 31 January 2018, 17:13:49 »

While I have the engine out of my Manta, I am going to do the cam belt as altho it has only done about 10,000mile max, it has been about 12 years since it was changed. Been looking for cam kits and the price range is mad, They start around £80 up to over £200. Now I don't want to pay over the odds, but neither do I want cheap crap. I have found a Gates kit at a reasonable price, but are Gates good quality, or would you recommend another manufacturer?

The engine is a 2.5 V6 BTW.

All of the kits I've seen have come with the same SKF bearing assemblies so I honestly don't think it matters much as long as it's a complete kit.

By the looks of it the Unipart GKT1453XS kit at £62.99 has SKF bearings  and is probably a re-branded SKF kit, might be old stock but even so I would have thought it should be fine. Seems the two sold earlier went for £30 and £45. So I would would send the vendor a message and make an offer. See what happens.

That said somebody else has the Unipart kit at £29.99 as New/Other with free delivery and the 'Make Offer button. (Missing original box?)

As I recall the original GM kits and and maybe some Gates kits used INA bearings. But I doubt if there is any difference in quality.
The kit also seems to have the revised design of rollers so ideally you need a Sealey VS1301 spanner or a similar tool as well as the locking kit.

I've still got the contitech timing belt kit I bought for the 3.2. will it go straight onto a 2.5 or is there some subtle difference between the parts.

Will fit, but just check the back plates on the tensioner, that's only difference, if 2.5 is early.

Look just paid £69.00 delivered for cambelt kit. :y

It is not that difficult, but it's not cheap.

I originally did the conversion back in 1997 and was the first in both the UK and Europe to fit a Vauxhall V6 into a Manta. Total cost was around £5000.
The actual engine fitment is not that bad, but you need a custom made sump, manifolds, exhaust and 15mm skimmed off the flywheel. Also if you don't want a bonnet bulge you need to modify the front cross member to sit the engine lower.

It is a lot of work, but I love it. Last time she was on the roller, it ran 215bhp and my best 1/4 mile is 13,45. She is a bit of an animal and a sure licence loser if you're not careful.
