Crankcases split the wrong way. The nips figured it out quickly enough.

Took them a while longer to figure out grip and handling though.  ;)
I still have a soft spot for old Triumphs and Nortons, but I wouldnt want to have to use one as daily transport.

Also, woefully inadequate flanges, so leaks guaranteed.

My Dad made me put a tray underneath my first motorbike when I was 16, ....because motorbikes always leak oil!  ::)

He was amazed that my little Kawasaki didn't leak.  ;D

I had a selection of RD 250/350/400 and seized every one of them at some point. Holed pistons as well.

The old 2 strokes were great fun though before we all decided we needed to save the planet. :-\

Excessive vibration was a problem for many old Brit bikes killing batteries and ignition coils.

That old Ariel of mine didn't used to vibrate so much as shudder every time it fired :D No battery to take a pounding on it either as it was on magneto ignition-great for unlit country lanes when you shut the throttle for the bends and the lights dimmed  :o ;D

I got caught riding a balck Dunstall 750 Commando when I was 16. The mate who owned absolutely destroyed the engine soon after as he was used to 2 stroke Kwaks, and wouldn't accept that the Norton wasn't going to rev the same way they did.  ::)
Triumph Trident was my favourite British bike. Would do around 120, which was as quick as almost anything else around at the time
