Thanks guys, esp for the info about legalising them.
Zirk, EE still do provide their boxes, but you have to be on contract, so my cunning plan of getting a PAYG sim didn't work. I would be interested if your son can confirm that buying one from a third party still needs authorisation from EE to work. If not I will  get one elsewhere.
