Computers...grrrr!
« on: 16 August 2008, 19:03:54 »

Decided I would quickly install a new Sata HDD and install XP Pro.

Why won't the wretched PC boot from the OEM CD or recognise the Sata drive (even though I've just formatted it from Win 2k)?  >:(

Think I'll give up and put it down to experience.  :-/

You might need to install a sata driver when XP setup asks for raid drivers Nick.
Had to do this with an old mobo when Tonygnome decided to replace his hd with sata.
You need to put the drivers on floppy and follow the instructions in setup IIRC.

Check the mobo's manufacturers website for a 'text mode' or 'F6' driver :y

Just maybe check that the PC is set to boot from the CD first.

Thanks for all your help, guys, ( :y) but I think I'll jack this in (after 5 hours!).

*The BIOS recognises the new Sata drive.
*Have formatted the new drive using Win 2K
*Have tried to get the BIOS to boot from both floppy and CD-ROM.
*Have now got the F6 driver on diskette (thanks TB), but of course until XP starts and asks for it, it's no use.
*On start-up it actually says "Bootable CD-ROM is found"

BUT

I always get the same message: "Reboot and select Boot device or insert boot media in slected boot device and press a key"

Always, no matter what I try. >:(

Think I'll stick with Win2K Pro and the old IDE disks. Much simpler.

Press F6 as soon as the XP install blue screen appears.

But sounds like your XP disk is not bootable.  Is it a genuine one, or a copy?

Worth updating, W2K bit long in the tooth now (as is XP)

XP install screen doesn't appear.

Yep, it's genuine, I never use copies.

first be sure from the bios CD-ROM is the first one in boot order..

second when it displays bootable CD-ROM found immediately press

enter to boot XP from CD

if you cant reach the blue screen theres something wrong..

if XP continues to load drivers and displays the message press F6 for additional drivers and if you have SCSI type or another disk connected to a controller which XP does not recognise you need to give this with F6..

Are you using a wireless keyboard? Only the 'Any' key doesn't get loaded till Windows starts...  :)

Thanks CEM and Dbug. :y

You've both given me a few things to think about. I'll try hitting the return as soon as it says "bootable CD found", but it goes past that message very quickly.

It could be the CD/DVD drive. I know the kids have been having a few problems with their CDs not loading on occasions recently.
