« on: 17 August 2008, 19:43:08 »

Coz it must be rubbish.......

There are two Smart cars in my local garage........both 04 plates gathering dust.......

Both belong to a pizza delivery shop.....

I asked the owner of the garage whats up with them......

He told me....."Both have siezed engines....Smart cars engines use oil.......and should be checked on a weekly basis......and you dont expect pizza delivery drivers to check the oil.......result 2 knackered smarts"

Yes, they are a little 3 pot engine with 6 valves and a camshaft setup very similar to that utilised on the old 8 valve Vx engines.

They have a habit of guzzling oil......and hence the failures.

Have a look here for some pics of this lump:

Little turbo charged 600cc engines, pretty highlyy tuned.  Performance is surprising good for what it is.

My brother had one as a company car (in preference to various Mercs) when he worked for a well known motor racing team, and he loved it.  When he resigned, he always said that was the one thing he missed.

6 valve surprised me - last 6V one I had seen was a friends Wet Super Dream.

I was expecting a 12v

What's that opposite the spark plug in the combustion chamber? Direct fuel injectors or twin spark perhaps?

Dropping a bike engine in does seem the sensible option. Apart from the power it would allow you to do clutchless gear changes in milliseconds instead of gear changes "under the supervision of the nannying electronics" which seem to take about 3 seconds in a smart.  >:(

If there's anything you do need in a car with a small, light, revvy but ultimately underpowered engine it's slick gearchanges. That could turn the Smart into something quite entertaining rather than the total bore it is currently, IMHO.

I couldn't get on with the stupid box, but my brother assures me once you got the hang of it, it was OK...   ...and his weekend car is an Elise...
