OOF Search Facility
« on: 19 August 2008, 13:04:41 »

I have been a little frustrated by the limitations of the search facility in only allowing a maximum of 25 items. This severely limits the ability to go back through older threads which may be of relevence. I mentioned this to Marks DTM on one occasion and he explained that this limitation was to avoid placing too much demand on the server, which I can well understand. He suggested doing a google search with omega owners and the search string but this again does not bring up all the threads.

I happened upon this website http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/t884672.html which has a google search 'widget' embedded into the page allowing a search of that specific site or the web as a whole. Not being a techie myself I am not sure how this works or if this would avoid putting strain on the server but is this an option for OOF and would it impart any benefits? Hope this has not been covered before but for the above reasons it is a little difficult to find out. One additional benefit of this kind of improvement could be a reduction in people asking the same questions repeatedly (I did say could) ::)

Tend to agree with v6coop's comments re site "poor" search facility.  Also have had to resort to Google on many occasions.  Is there anything that can be done to improve on-site search?

The google site searches embedded in to sites do nothing more than going to google and doing a 'site:www.omegaowners.com' followed by search string on googles site.  So embedding one doesn't really gain anything.

The built in search is limited due to the architecture of the software we use.  A considerable improvement in disk i/o would help, but doesn't warrant spending £700 - £1k on a new disk subsystem  :'( - I know the price as I was pricing up an upgrade a few days ago...

Thanks TB shame really but I understand the predicament. Is there any way to get a googlebot to crawl the whole forum? Or is this dictated by the hit rate? Don't supose there is any way that we could run more detailed searches overnight and collect the details in the morning?

We have no control over Google's (or anyone else's) indexing.

As to overnight batches, the server is always busy - during the supposedly overnight period, Yandex is hitting us hard, and we are running the tape backups then.

Accept your comments Jaime - particularly re spending that sort of money on a new disk subsystem.

Also recognise that the embedded google site searches do a site search through google.  However, for the less internet aware members, the embedded google site search makes it easier, and more convenient, to do a more exhaustive forum site search.  Is it worth considering incorporating this featute on OOF?

Noted, and consideration will be given shortly after next software drop, due soon.
