Pet IT Hates
« on: 19 August 2008, 00:22:39 »

e-mails from my team requesting tech support for the desktop/toolset that the subject is just

"PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!! URGENT "

I dont know if its the lack of info, the caps lock, the urgent tag when they don't tick the "urgent" marker in outlook or the over use of the "!"

Just had one come in on my blackberry, he could not remember the path for the office printer...

(there must be 15 other people in the office right now, why they had to contact me on the BB is beyond me...)

Much the same when you look in the OOF Tech help forum....  A plain HELP post header is not the most informative heading....

Aye...

Dont know why, but it really winds me up - it's like fraud check jobs I get when it say's "CALL SITE URGENT" on the info plane - What do they think I'm going to do, guess the problem ?

Just seems to be my pet hate this week - non descript subjects :(

I don't know about you, but e-mails with titles like that just get relegated to the bottom of the pile when I'm going through my inbox.  ;D

The calls that turn me from a friendly support engineer into a completely facetious bastard are ones like "Greg, my computer is broken..." or "Excel isn't working..." they particularly annoy me when it's blatant user error  ::)

My other pet hate is Microsoft. My company runs an MS shop and they continue to release patches and updates that break other unassociated stuff. Then they charge the earth to open a support call with them and blame it on the hardware vendor when it's blatantly an MS problem.

I hate the way terms keep changing. What is wrong with directories, "what do you mean folder?", "Sorry directory"

I think thats more to do with the industry getting out of command line based interfaces and into GUI's. But I know what you mean.

I still think of Windows as a GUI on top of a CLI, even if the NT line isn't

Pet IT hates, this could be a long one....

Sysadmins who think they know what they are doing, but clearly dont.
Emails with 'text speak'
How every problem is a server issue, until the server teams prove otherwise
Inappropriate email subject headings
Idiots who forward chain emails
Why many people in IT can't handle change - anything new is worse than previous generation

Oh, I could go on and on and on and......

Quite often the new is inferior to the old

eg Win98 vs WinME
Netware 5.1 vs Netware 6
XP or 2000 vs Vista
