I suspect Mr scimmy_man is correct ,makes sense to put newspapers in (but why have 2 holes  :-\)
but do watch out for elephants Uncle Stemo
just in case  BIGRON is correct  :o  ;D

I doubt the paperboy theory is correct. I only showed you half of the wall, there are two more on the other side of the gate.

No , it's Yorkshire, all the walls are made of stone
(the builder would just "borrow" stone from another wall nearby ) :y
posh modern technology like clay water pipes  on the other hand .........
