help needed with drivers for XP
« on: 24 August 2008, 23:35:29 »

I have been given a working IBM T41 lappy that i intend to use as a spare/tutorial machine.

I have put a fresh version of XP home edition of it, however like a numpty i didn't make a note of the make of the sound card or ethernet adaptors and now nothing works.

I foolishly expected XP to load the drivers onto the lappy for me as i was under the impression it came with a load of them preloaded.

Any ideas on how i can fine out who make the items or get the drivers?

Thanks

There are some specs here that may help:-

Yes, as others have said, try IBM first. If that failes, go for generic drivers once you have the spec.

I have an old T22 and each time I clean it out and reinstall xp I go to the ibm site and there is an option to auto load all the drivers. You download a small piece of software and it looks at your machine and downloads all it needs from IBM

Then you have to download from another machine and transfer it via USB flash or with a CD-R..And I think writing them down to CD is good idea as it will be an archieve for later use..

The LAN devices are plug and play. Trouble is, XP, being 7yrs old, only has 7yr old drivers on the CD, so newer devices are left without drivers.

I think Cem is right on this one.

However, Ethernet chipsets are quite generic. It might be worth manually selecting an old IBM driver from the list. If PnP will let you install it, you may be able to get it going enogh to get you on t'internet.
