If it did simply slam on, then it would be utterly useless as an emergency brake as the consequence of doing so at speed could be fatally catastrophic 

It definitely did not feel 'progressive'.. rather like we had hit a wall

The manual only says:

"If, while driving, a fault occurs in the brake system, the parking brake can be used as an emergency brake.
Pull the (p) button in the direction of arrow 1 and » Fig. 254 hold (you hear an audible signal) the vehicle starts to brake strongly.
The braking process is interrupted when the key is released or the accelerator”"

I think they understate "strongly"

It should be coming on hard enough to stop the car asap, but not to lock up.  As its use in motion implies that the main brake system has failed and you need to stop quickly.

Why would an electronic one make any difference to a manual one? 

because if I set off with my electric 'hand' brake on, it'll automatically release  Doesn't yours? 

I was, of course, referring to it from an MOT point of view.

I'm not the biggest fan of them, never have been, as it can't be used with precision to aid the driving experience or do 1 point turns in the road.  Plus on mine, using it in motion does apply it in the way you would expect an emergency brake to, and it bongs loudly.  Never had that issue with a big lever.  I do like the idea of a big mechanical connection between the hand and the pads/shoes

But an electronic one is not a show stopper for me.

Nor could Merc's previous foot operated parking brake.  And they only just worked as a brake anyway.

My R Class's parking brake was a similar set up to that of the Omega & Senator ie a top hat disc/drum ...... my ML now has an electric brake that applies the pads to the disc & have got rid of the drum/shoe

Our new McDonalds is really clean - the employees are sent out to clean not only the immediate area, but the wildlife sanctuary behind it (several miles long)

The ground in Morrisons (McDonalds are in a corner of that) is covered in these, however, thanks to the local dealers..
