Have a proper read of the declaration before judging it.

It's actual purpose was to take stock, regardless of how good or bad the year has been, and give thanks to God for all the things we should be grateful for.

Granted it has been turned into a commercial opportunity, but even now, more families get together to celebrate Thanksgiving than get together for Christmas.  ;)
