Gearbox drive shaft and oil seal question

My sons Fiat Seicento 2002 has a drive shaft inner oil seal leaking.

The input shaft on the left in the pics is the leaking seal side. Does the shaft where the seal comes in contact need cleaning to smooth it off or does it look OK and just to put back together with a new seal like it is?

Does the shaft retaining clips look how they should?

Ive never done one before so I'm in the dark.

surface Looks pitted
clean it up beyond where the seal sits and lube before you shove it in  ;D
clips look fine ,squashing them in more tends to just spring back

won't last if the shaft is badly pitted but how much longer will a 2002 Fiat last anyway  :-\

the left shaft does look to have some light pitting BUT it looks to be not where the actual seal has been running( shiny line) also the other shaft looks to have the seal running in a different place ? .this could just be a characteristic of where the shaft fits/ depth etc or a different design seal ?
if the new seal is fitted correct( lip with spring facing into the diff) and the line where the old seal has run is a constant one with no pitting anywhere then you should be fine. no harm lightly polishing the surface which can only improve it so long as the line is not very deep and you end up polishing too much metal away which doesnt look the case here .

The leaking seal is set back in differently to the other side. So I think you're spot on there.

What is the best thing to use to clean it up a bit?

Fine emery cloth or if you really wanted to, there are Speedy Sleeves for this kind of thing, but I've seen far worse without.

Just some fine wet and dry will do ok, the old seal has probably failed due to it going hard.

That face is nowhere near Speedi Sleeve (Simply Bearings do a good range) stage  :y

I'll keep that in mind.

Using wet and dry, how coarse can I use for it not to effect the new seals?

A bit of 400 grit wet will be fine, wont need much, you can see where the seal lip has run in the form of the bright ring

I've just seen a video from Payen oil seals that advised not to use any lub on there seals because they will leak because they are made from PTFE and should be fitted on a dry shaft.


Seems a lot of people smear some grease on the the outside and the inside of the oil seal when fitting. Is this ok to still do with the Payen seals?

Do you also put lub on the outer edge that goes into the gearbox or leave that part
