I've just seen a video from Payen oil seals that advised not to use any lub on there seals because they will leak because they are made from PTFE and should be fitted on a dry shaft.


Seems a lot of people smear some grease on the the outside and the inside of the oil seal when fitting. Is this ok to still do with the Payen seals?

Pop your finger through the seal and into the gearbox, get a dab of gearbox oil and wipe this around the seal, its the same stuff it will spend its life exposed to.

Is it possible to put the seal in too far or is there a stop point that it reaches?

I think its back in further than what it was.

Generally they only go in so far, if it's in fractionally further or the seal not so deep, then it can be a good thing as the lip will run on a fresh surface on the drive shaft
