Am I right in thinking that a coil charges while points are closed and discharges when open?  If so, does the spark occur the moment the points start to open or near the peak of the distributor cam?

From memory, but probably wrong, just as the points open.  Been ages since I played with them and condensers, and suppressors and the like!

The plug sparks for the duration of the time the points are open.  The points gap plays a part in the timing of this cycle, larger gap disturbs the timing, as does too small.  

The dovetail in the top of the distributor shaft allows the correct location of the rotor arm to 'distribute' the spark to the correct plug lead.

(you probably know or have worked all that out already but, just in case   )
