Be that STEMO ex linesman character I expect...

...or maybe people know you are ringing and have left the old bakelite set off hook?

Unless it's one of those new fangled wireless cellular devices.... perhaps you haven't paid the bill?

We are with Vodafone and the calls go through a router. just changed the sim for one from EE but still only the engaged signal. It may be the phone itself that is fu*cked.

Tried that, Al. I'm going to put some new batteries in the phone itself to see if that makes a difference.

Engaged tone is used as a default when there is a switching fault...........consumers are more accepting (don't complain as much) of it as they consider the number to be engaged.

So sounds like a fault

I think I have solved the problem, after causing it in the first instance.

Internet speed was shit slow so I changed the setting from 3G to 4G in the router because I thought this may improve the speed.

Now I have changed the settings back to 3G I can make calls again.

4G cannot natively make voice calls, and not all SIM contracts have VoIP enabled to allow the voice call as data (often called VoLTE).  Sounds like yours doesn't (or the handset lacks it).

4G is data only.

Being thick I assumed everything is currently 4G, until it is 5G.

I thought 2G and 3G was long gone. :)

2G and 3G still used to service the vast majority of voice calls (and 2G is used extensively in telemetry functions, such as some smart meters and monitoring systems).

5G aint here yet.  Only Vodafone have a true 5G network, and that is a tiny subset of their claimed "5G" coverage.  O2, EE and Three are not even publically trialling full 5G yet, despite what they may claim.
