I broke my PC today
« on: 29 August 2008, 20:48:17 »

My old desktop.

It started smoking from somewhere around the system board, then promptly locked up.  Oddly, wouldn't boot after that.

Do you reckon its toast?

Oh dear you let the smoke out - unless you can find a refill I think you are stuffed

Smoke is never good....

It has been locking intermittently for a while, and the HDD is fubar (one of the old OOF ones, so well thrashed)....

FFS, 12V and about 5 amps is the maximum Watts the mobo gets. That's not enough to blow smoke that you could smell, let alone see from outside.

Try a new power supply. I bet it perks up, good as new.

Added to 5v at around 15A, and 3.3v at several amps as well....

Its an old 3Ghz P4, time to retire it methinks.

Don't think its a PSU fault - the lockups that its been doing does smack of PSU fault, but my experieneced nose tells me otherwise.  I cannot explain why, I think its the video card.

The failing HDD is, I reckon, unrelated....

12V x 5A = 60W
5V x 15A = 75W
3.3V x 30A = 100W

Was the smoke you saw akin to a blown lightbulb? If more then the PSU is the only place that you can make 'good smoke'  :)

If not, the system is toast and you'd better tell Mrs TB that unexpected expenditure is urgent and imminent...  :y

The favourites I've seen are PSU going pop, cheap capacitors on the motherboard going pop, and the fan on the video card siezing whereby the video chip overheats, causing crashes until it burns up or de-solders itself from the board.
