Why do you expect anything different from the NHS?

Not a question of being cynical, everything done thus far hasn't really achieved much, so perhaps we would be better spent learning to live with it.

Learning, you say? Ahh, that's going to be a problem. ::)

I'm afraid that it is all down to the individual & a bit of luck, try to protect yourself as best you can , it seems fairly obvious that very little is known about this virus & every day the theories change it's definitely not going away anytime soon & a lot of folk seem incapable of following the guidelines anyway stay safe as best you can. Personally I don't think that any government in power would have coped any better.

I think we need troops on the streets, anybody without a valid reason to be out should be shot..

Totally agree.

Had to smile reading a question on an expat forum here in Spain. I am organising a quiz night. Is the maximum number I can have six or is it six per table as suggested by the establishment. . It isnt just folks having illegal raves or big indoor family gatherings.

That's the problem with this lockdown lite, almost anyone can go out. Just not to pubs, restaurants, hairdressers, barbers, gyms, clothes shops, etc. The school run will be just as busy, as will the roads with white van man and Amazon. Going out for exercise or essential shopping or medical reasons means anyone can go anywhere they want to, there will be no checks on anyone because it's all just advice. Half arsed, as I said.
And, as Mick said, it's up to the individual to keep themselves and others safe. I think supermarkets should be made more accountable for what happens inside.

While I agree that most Govts. have struggled as much as ours with Covid, I think Boris has has just done himself serious political damage.
From the start they have got away with everything that has gone good or bad by following the scientific advice.
Not this time though. He was advised to do what he has just done weeks ago and chose not to. Starmer obviously got wind of it and publicly called for a "circuit breaker lockdown".
Now Boris has decided to do it he has given is opponents two sticks to beat him with.
1. He ignored the scientists and therefore killed a lot of people.
2. He isnt fit to govern due to being indecisive and utterly heartless, and should be replaced by Starmer who would have done this weeks ago, and saved a lot of lives.
He will struggle to live it down.

I watched it on the telly on the way back from Mums. I think its something that had to happen, as it did back in March.

I can see a period of 3 or 4 week stringent restrictions, followed by a similar period of looser, but still restricted, times. all repeated until a viable workaround can be implemented, with vaccination(s) looking the most likely.

I think he delayed doing it so that easing would start early December, as its absolutely critical that retail gets a workable Christmas, else there really will not be a High Street next year.

I do fear, though, decent pubs will be a thing of the past, esp in urban areas - though you could argue that happened a decade ago when gastro pubs or those selling artisan beers exclusively cause the extinction of the social pubs.

Only these lockdowns do need properly enforcing.  Its clear the Brits are either too stupid or too self centred to do it through education.

Agreed. The young in particular seem to think its some bollix on the news that they can completely ignore.
As a start, those Uni students who are holding parties in their rooms should be expelled from Uni, with no ifs buts or appeals.
I think there is also a problem in Asian communities. Culturally they are still communities and very close families(unlike Brits) and spend a lot of time in and out of each others houses. I suspect its a hard habit to break.
Presumably, things will open up again in time for Christmas, and then the whole process will repeat itself, until someone invents a definitive vaccine / cure.

It's not a lockdown though, is it? As someone said on one of Mo's social media accounts this morning 'A lockdown with schools open is like having a designated weeing area in a swimming pool'. Very clever and very true.

Well, these young people etc. can party all they like, but when I see them on telly crying that their Granny has just died of Covid, I wont have a shred of sympathy for them.  ;)

From what has been written on this thread I believe the majority of us can see how stupid some people are , a lot of if it is caused by peoples attitude to being " told" what to do but that is the way the world is going I'm afraid, anti authority will lead to self destruction just a matter of time.

Anti authority is nothing new. From the moment new Labour started telling kids that there were no losers on sports day, and they had human rights, the mould was set. Kids are taught how to behave in adulthood while growing up, in the main, and the last three or four generations have been taught that there are really no serious sanctions that can lawfully be applied.
From the moment the first kid said to his teacher 'You can't touch me, it's against the law', we'd had it.
