Faceachebook and Google are trying to control Australian free speech and media.

The Australians, to their credit, have told them to piss off.

Aussie Government have got a little upset that their media isn't getting paid for news coverage, as, the likes of Facebook and Google spread news for 'free'.

The Aussie's want the likes of Facebook to pay lots of money to them for the privilege of free speech.

I mean, I kind-a get it.  The likes of Facebook shouldn't really be an outlet for 'News' as it can be manipulated in a number of ways, usually losing all track of what the original story was about.

But, I also think the Aussies are idiotic in what they are attempting to do.  The way we consume 'Media' and 'News' has changed.  Very few people buy a Newspaper nowadays (for many reasons), the 6PM & 10PM News Broadcasts only have substantial viewing figures when something catastrophic has happened.

Trouble is Facebook and Google are trying to control what news people see.

If you posted that Donald Trump said that grass is green, they would fact check it as probably  inaccurate. Just because they don't agree with him.

The fact they get paid ad revenue in the process suggests that they take payment to control what people see and are told.

The Australian media still actually reports the news, which is a problem for social media companies who prefer that they choise what to tell us.

I agree totally with what the Australian government are doing. It costs money to run a newspaper, and to have a social media organisation carrying the same newsfeed for free can only have one outcome. The newspaper disappears and you have social media as the only source of information. That is a very dangerous situation and, if people are scared that young people won't be able to access the news because they only get it from arsebook, then that's tough. Young people will have to realise that news, music and all the other content that they expect for free is actually costing someone money to produce.
If arsebook wants to spit it's dummy out, that's ok with me. Having a knobhead like Zukerberg deciding what's true and what isn't is definitely not a good way to move forwards. Arsebook is the younger generations bible, and that is far too much power in the hands of someone who pretends to take a moral stance but is really only in it for the money and power. I hope that other governments take a similar stance.

Wholeheartedly agree with you DG.

The problem with the methodology of the Australian Government is, they have/are imposing a fee to companies (US Tech Giants, as they call them) to broadcast News.

Whilst I understand why they want to/are doing it, it rubs me up the wrong way as it is 'double standards'.

If they came out and said "You shall not post news articles in our Country", then fine... But, to say "You can post whatever drivel you like, provided you pay for it" is somewhat wanky.... Dontchafink?

Simple solution. Ban Arsebook. Problem solved.

Anyone who even remotely cares about their privacy shouldn't ever have signed up to the service.

And people saying its a convenient aggregator are the stupid ones causing all the problems in the world.

Shut it down, Pronto.

Plus, of course, a platform for people to post vile content from their grubby little bedrooms with little or no chance of being brought to book.

Edit: By no means the only platform.
