Mrs Bitz first car was a 1964 mini (in1979) she put it through a hedge ,and herself in hospital, she still has a great fondness for old minis though,
my mates 92 year old mother in law has just given up driving and her mini ,which i think is a 40th anniversary special edition is going up for sale.dont know how many miles but i would imagine not many at all.

Mini, great car in the 60's and a crock of shite in the 80's......
In the 80's Minis were sadly fitted with the A series+ engines which were never as good standard or tuned.  Mid to late 70's they replaced the front subframe mounts with rubber which lost some of the tight direct feel of the 60's mini, hence many of us replacing them with nylon aftermarket bushes.
Later Minis were never what the earlier ones were but rotted just as quickly. Still love 'em though Mark but you do have a point. ::)

When i was 18 a mate & i bought a 998cc Cooper (yes they did make them & few others besides the 1275). It was a 1968 red with a black roof, chrome remote change gear lever & central speedo calibrated to 100 mph as oppose to the usual 90mph one. As always it'd be worth a pretty penny today but we sold it on & it died in a police chase. :'(
Ironically it was registered OOF***G! Can't remember the 3 numbers though. 8-)

Minis are great cars. I ran an owners club a few years ago and had a Mini with a 1380 turbo engine in it (taken from an MG Metro and bored out). It had around 130 BHP (which was a lot of fun) but it kept eating gearboxes at around one per month.

I became quite a dab hand at removing the engine just so that I could change the gearbox!! :o

The mini could have been a great car, when it was launched it was a great car but, 10 years later, no change, 20 years later no change and 30 years later no change.

If it been developed and had decent modern engines etc fitted, better safety, it might have kept up with the competition.

But, it didn't hence why for me, it is the symbol of the death of the UK motor industry.

This is why I  personaly rather hate them and driving them to, yes they are very go-kart like but, there not comfortable, not well built, very poor in a crash and bloody noisey!

They changed from external door hinges to modern internal/hidden hinges! And didn't they change a floorpan seam around early on, to stop road spray from leaking in?  :-/  :y  :y  :y  ;D

Being as no one has answered your question Kev, I will...

My wife had a mini nearly 20 years ago, a gold Mayfair, and it tried to kill me by setting on fire, so on my behalf you're just getting even.

So.. kill it and smile when you do it  :)

Might also have helped if they'd actually worked out how much they cost to make and sold them for a profit!
