Be careful you don't fall foul of council tax -- if "granny flat" is self contained it will get another band. Not usually a prob if relly is there for "care", cos they will be exempt --- but when they leave ( for whatever reason) you will be stuck with two bands --- and it's a b*gger getting it sorted.

I have 2 friends who have gone down the Granny Flat route. And it has not really worked out very well.

If you were going to do it, you would need to stipulate the rules before you start. ie. They cannot just come into your half of the home unless you know in advance.

Keep the accommodation strictly separate, with locks and keys. This may sound unfriendly but, you will all be much happier in the long run.

Some friends of mine had a granny annex built on the side of their house. There were no rules to start off with, and it caused a lot of friction when they had to stop the mother-in-law from wandering around, and invading their privacy.  :-* :-* :-*
