Just been researching this for my american wife who works in the UK and pays her tax and NI there.  The cost of getting indefinite leave to remain in the UK after paying $500 for the marriage visa in the first place is:

To say I am shocked is an understatement.  Regardless of the fact that I serve my country et al the missus, who came here legally, abides by all UK laws and its, sometimes, bizarre customs has already paid several hundreds of pounds for various visas and we still have to pay this charge!

£950 on the day, £750 if you wait 13 weeks or more.  Try to get her work to cover part of it?  

Doesn't help you, but at least you can put a whole family on one application.

We didn't pay the wedding visa, or mess with Home Office approval, got married elsewhere.  Was a lot cheaper.

Cant do that as she works for an airline and needs her passport, plus I am in the throws of preperation for going for a play in the Sandpit

Same here got married in Hawaii    but still had to get a marriage visa which cost $500 and lasted 2 years after her Airline visa run out.  The next step now is indefinite leave to remain and I was so pissed off it took a trip to see my new car to calm me down

Mrs. KW still has her old passport in her maiden name after 2 years and no one cares. Just book flights in her maiden name. No point in paying for a new passport until the old one expires.
