Im pretty certain it would the Transport Police that would have to clear the mess up.........however......cancelling trains etc is expensive for the operating companies.....

I know that if GW trains cancel a service (that may have happened in a case like James witnessed) they get fined £4k......plus have to pay for taxi's for travellers missing connections.....GW trains....im told....spent £70k on taxi's in one month....for connections missed....

So the the train comps are probably under a lot of pressure by the bosses not to interupt services.

transport police can do eff all, as kids will be long gone, so waste of everyone's time imho....

Don't give a sod for the trespassers, it is the poor driver I pity and yes drivers have won compensation from suicide estates.

And you are likely to be gathered up in a wheel barrow

I believe you are right TB, actually.

But in balance, I would never live with myself if I went home and saw on the news they had been mowed down.

I felt I had to do it :y

I couldn't live with myself for having the driver go through it - sod the trespassers

I would feel just as bad for the people that have to do the cleanup, and for the driver that has to live with the experience.

I agree it is utterly stupid to walk on a railway - but I can't say with any conviction that they deserve to die for it  :)

i wouldn't have lost sleep - 2 less retarded idiots in the world is a good thing.

feel for the driver though - i believe they have to clean the bits up?

The victim in these cases is always the driver, usually they end up on shunting, or having to leave the job, the cleaner uppers rely on black humour.

There are two things which ruin drivers careers, selfish suicides and bricks through cab windows.

All trespassers are potential suicide cases.

Clearing up the bits?  It would not be the driver, of that I am 100% certain.

It is a BTP responsibility which may (or probably may not) be transferred onto a contracted undertaker.  I would still suggest that its one of the 'sticky' jobs that El Plod simply have to do and get on with it....   :'(

Definately not drivers - yes could be BTP

The driver I would feel sorry for, the bin men who have to celar up the mess I would feel sorry for, even the family I might feel sorry for.......the daft gits walking on the line I dont!

Don't forget the station staff, my girlfriend works at Cov station & often sees the remains on the front of trains.

If James hadn't phoned & one of them got mowed down the delays could have been far worse...

I remember reading about a loco being serviced and the workers finding a hand on top of a traction motor, (think it was a Deltic)

The bits of woman I saw went in want looked like a bin liner (could have been a small body bag I guess.  And that was just a modest speed collision...

I remember chatting to some staff and they were telling me about the wheelbarrows used on the bank out of Plymouth towards Exeter

I remember my dad being brought home by the transport police because he had run over a lad of approx 18 to 20 yrs of age all the gaffers ever did was interview me dad to see if he was doing his job correctly i.e. within speed limits set for the area of track and that was it till the coroners enquiry...He found out that this lad had been bullied at work for sainsburys where he was trainee manager he had been told by the bullies that he was going to be fired..well he took it real bad enough to want to go out and commit suicide by calmley walking out in front the old mans DMU and placing his head onto the railway track and just before my dad hit him he turns his head and smiles  :o :o there was nothing my dad could do...but he did go back with the guard at the time all they found was the mangled remains of a body next to the track...Worst part of the story the lad was not gonna fired!! he was gonna be fast tracked to store manager...the people who wound him up enough to get him to do this had to live with that for the rest of their lives...my dad talked of it once and once only after the coroners inquest my dads hair was jet black before the accident he went grey a week after the accident he stayed a mainline driver for the next 20 years till he retired after suffering an heart attack 2 hrs before he was due to goto work after that he was on the shunting at oxley sheds till he took early retirment/redundacy....I suspect he has had nightmares about that kid since.... You did the right thing james...
