Hi all

My neighbour just bought an antara diesel auto and said could I have a look at it as there was a leak underneath, he was out this morning and said I'd see him when he got back, he got back - just - and said we tried putting the car on my ramps but it wouldn't drive back or forward.

I checked for codes, there were none, but noticed that underneath the sump and area around the crank oil seal looks ok, but the oil is coming down onto the tray that covers the box.

I'm starting to think it is autobox leaking, and it's finally ran out hence the no drive. Does anyone have any advice or knowledge of these cars and common faults?

I read that there is a dipstick under the battery tray, but I've took all that out and found a screw in cap like an oil filler, not a dipstick, although somone said it's at the front near the engine mount so will have another look.

I just put a litre of ATF in it and tried it, now drives ok. Going to put it up on ramps try and get a better look at where it's coming from.

Mind you, the only guarantee a car should be sold with is that it will break and no warranty can predict or protect against when or how.

I would hazard a guess that the problem maybe with the transfer box, assuming that this is a four wheel (AWD) version.

Having had an Antara I had a continuous problem with an oil leak from under the car from when it was only 6 months old until I got rid at just over 4 years old. This was despite dealers 4 attempts to reseal the transfer box to gearbox face. This is a common problem with these vehicles caused by the fact that a gasket is not used but instead a specialised sealant. It usually arises at first because insufficient sealer was used at the South Korean factory where these are built. Leaks begin soon after and it is a major job for a dealer to reseal it as evidenced the 4 tries they had with mine without success, each time the cure only lasting about 7-9 months, the last of which prompted me to get rid of the vehicle.

There is also a known problem with the transfer boxes as well. There is a bearing within the box that can cause a hole to be worn in the casing of the box, letting oil to leak out and in the worse case scenario all oil to be lost and the box suddenly destroying itself. The hole caused by the bearing rubbing against the casing cannot be repaired so the only option is renewal at the sum of in excess of £2500. Plenty about this on the Antara forums and other places.

So if it is a four wheel drive model and the leak can be established as coming from the transfer box or its face to the gearbox my advice would be get rid of the vehicle quickly.

Yep that would be about right!!

His wife was giving him aggro for not asking me to have a look over it before he bought it, it was a private sale so unfortunately he's been shafted by the looks of it. He never even told me he was getting rid of his Kia sedona, which was a bit shabby, but nothing wrong with it.

So took the undertray off, cleaned all the oil away, then went for a quick drive to get it leaking. The oil is pouring out about a teaspoon say over a minute. There's a small hole right at the bottom of the box where it mates to the engine, and it's pouring out there.

Only thing I can suspect is this transfer box seal or a geabox input shaft seal. There's a video below so maybe someone can advise. You'll see the oil dribble down after about 11 secs. Note this is the leak slowing down as initially after the run it was about double this flow rate.

Trouble is people by these things with zero thought and don't think to ask why it is such a 'bargain'. Failing to ask basic questions doesnot a victim make.

They were shit cars when new, and therefore unlikely to improve over time.

Either way, engine and box out and clean both thoroughly before replacing seals and sealant.

Given that the Chevy Captiva is essentially the same vehicle, does it also share this fault?

Yes, it is 4*4. Where it's leaking out I'm not sure if this is the transfer box or the actual gearbox itself. That is in as far as I can see where it's coming out, but not th actual source of the leak.

Like DG said it's going to be a box out and replace relevant seals by the looks of it. Think he's panicking as just paid 3500 for it. Think he must feel like a turkey that just caught Bernard Mathews grinning at it!
