Nothing serious - collection of little things getting on my nerves at the moment.

Work. We are currently running an absolulte shambles of a content management system on a webserver, which serves a huge number of websites within the public sector. It's a botched up job created by a previous member of staff, written with a very obscure package. It constantly falls over and is.... just rubbish. The needs of the organisation far exceed what this system can remain stable with - and it keeps growing. We put a bid in to replace it with something more suitable, and I have put my recommendations forwards very strongly, and guess what - nobody has listened.

In itself it woulddn't usually bother me, but despite telling management it needs replaced... I keep getting contacted on my days off, and have to go in and repair it when it falls over  

While I am happy to help at work, this is getting silly, and is causing no end of problems. Yet - the management board have rejected my bid, leaving me to make do. I can only firefight it for so long. It's like a pack of cards, one day someone will add one too many, and it will die big style.

May sound trivial (and IS trivial, in the scheme of life) but it's really getting on my nerves at the moment.

Coupled with the fact I have a colleague who never shows up, can't do his job and gets away with murder... very much an old boys club in senior management too.

I am also struggling to find time to do the things I want and need to do outside work, like walk the dogs, fix the car, spent time with Maria,
and of course attend the training course that I am on for several weekends - which needless to say requires a lot of concentration. I am enjoying the course but, it's a pain when every break time I have to check my phone and respond to this rubbish, rather than mix with my group more.

A day off is fast becoming a rare thing.

We have a holiday booked for a week in November, and the mobile and laptop will NOT be coming with me - I don't care if I get a disciplinary for it either, I am not carrying that across Europe when I am meant to be on annual leave!!

sooner or later..

And look to the positive side:  they need you everytime..

ps: I also hate to maintain systems designed by amateurs..And had too many debates with boss because I refused.

I could be way off target but, it sounds a bit like willing donkey syndrome James.In my experience poor managers overload willing workers and are too spineless to do anything about lazy/unwilling workers. they constantly rely on good people to sort their mess out for them. :-/

I went free lance 8 years ago and havent looked back. I just do the job and move on, it suits me and them.
 Better still i earn more than the employees i work with (cake & eat it)
Ok im automotive but i know a fair few people in IT that are free lance as well

I know that feeling...unless it's a job requirement (or you get paid for it), just don't answer the phone for a week or two.  

If it's a day off, it's a day off..probably the same as you - don't mind a 2/5minute phone call, but when it gets daft, something has to give.  When they call, just tell them you're either a) drunk, or b) in Lisbon...

Could not agree more, I am in a situation similar to this, my boss is useless, he only got the job because he has the "university ticket" to say he can do it.
Reality is the other technician and myself do everything, he occasionally comes in to work at 10am, and often does not come to work at all. We have tried to take this matter to higher management, they just ignore us.
What I will say is, I am keeping written and electronic copies of everything regarding his absences. And when the stuff hits the fan I can cover my backside.
Our customers come to. and will only talk to us two Technicians. They will not speak to the manager.

Oh I'm in the mood for a good rant tonight

when I was in management and tried to offload work from hardworking and (to me)highly valued employees ,and give it to lazy tinkers who thought they were doing me a favour by just turning up,I got eaten alive by senior managers for giving their golf/drinking buddies a hard time.In the end,I resigned my post and went back to the shop floor. Who got promoted to my old job ?......yep,the laziest little troublemaker in the company.

I'm afraid I wouldn't last five minutes in any of these situations. I dont suffer fools very easily and I would end up punching someone. Best I stay at home and look after the house

If your boss is a useless git - just give his phone number out to irate customers...perferably his home and mobile numbers.

I NEVER give out a home number to anyone to do with work, as a mobile can be switched off, or left on silent (whoops!).

I've left good jobs because of the "old boys network" thing at places - the best managers i've found are the ones that used to work the shop floors as they know the score.  Thats probably why i get on well with my immediate boss and the director above - both have done my job in the past - so know the score.

I have sod all respect for some honours degree fast-track manager who still wears their old university scarf/socks/blazer.

I feel your annoyance, Jon - wife working the pub trade for years where there's no such thing as a day off when you're a manager.  In the last 6 months before she got signed off sick (stress related), she had 3 days off - total.

Evening James. When mobile phones first came out i loved 'em, took mine everywhere with me & felt lost without it....soon got sick of that when the novelty wore off, these things allow you no privacy at all from freinds, work canvass calls etc. Everyone expects you to be at their beck & call 24/7, just 'coz you have a Moby.
   My golden rule is, both my personal & work phones NEVER go upstairs, simple, no ifs or buts. Some friends don't like it, my boss HATES it but break 'em. We all need time out. We survived ok beforehand.
