hi all
my head unit was fine at playing cd's with no issues .  i took the cartridge into the house to replace the cd's as id been listening to the same ones for quite a while !
a week later i put the cartridge back in and it does the usual ......check cd4,,check cd3 etc and you can hear it loading up etc.
after  which it says   NO  CD
ive tried it a few times. all proper cd's the right way up and tried the previous cd's too .it ejects fine and inserts fine . doesnt show open or magazine messages . radio and cassette working fine .
any ideas please ?
thankyou.

Might be worth trying a lens cleaner disc. Probably a quid or two on the eBays nowadays.

still no go so next on list is to remove unit and clean it manually .and maybee power it up to see if its drawing in all the discs and the laser is operating .otherwise ive heard the lasers are obsolite now ( there is a ebay listing for new ones at the moment ? )
then maybee a trip round scrappys . is it the same unit as fitted into ncdc2013 2015 and cdc3 .
anything else ?

ok so next observation . in a correct working unit
when you put in a magazine it will check if theres a cd in all 4 slots in turn and then at the end say 1234 if theres 4 in . so if theres none in it will still check as normal and then should say 'no cd'
. so if i put a magazine in with just one cd it should still check all 4 as normal and just report 1 cd in . is this correct ?. if so i would expect the noise of it loading up cd's to be different with an empty slot rather than with a cd in .mine seems to make the same noises regardless how many cd's are in the magazine which makes me think its not actually loading any . when you look into the front as you put the magazine in you can see it expand upwards as it should but its hard to see if the cd's are actually bring drawn in or not ????

Doesn't the playing arm/laser move in beneath the disc to be ready within the expanded case?

There physically isn't the space for it to be removed from the pile...

i think my next port of call has to be
remove the unit, power it up on the bench and see if the discs are loading and / or see if the laser is moving or illuminating.
seeing as it was working perfectly until i changed the discs i cannot see the coincidence that the laser has suddenly failed but obviously its possible.
i need to see whats happening inside then decide whats needed.
otherwise a trip to the scrappies next week to see what theyve got. usually have omegas and vectras in so anything with the cdc3 4 disc unit in should be suitable ( lids and vertical pcb retained )

If the Vectra units are from the same unit manufacturer they should be ok for parts supply but the Vectra C is a CanBus connected unit so isn't plug and play and some of the control elements within it may be different  ;)

does that apply if im only using the cd mechanism itself  from one ?
all im thinking is there are far more vectras around in scrapyards than omegas and although i inow a yard that had plenty omega bits in finding a good cd unit will be hard nowadays .  mind you this all depends on what mine actually does on the bench !
thanks

You should be ok for the mechanics of it, just tread carefully with any electronic bits...

Compare each component side by side and you shouldn't go to far wrong ;)

cheers
so please if anyone has the same unit can i confirm that what i think is correct
( or if someone can try theirs and listen to it !)

the magazine itself doesnt know how many cd's are in it .ie it has no electronics or tags .
when you insert a magazine the player checks all the discs and reports 1234 if all are present and correct ?
does it do this by reading each disc index info
can you hear it spin the discs ? i cannot hear mine do this ??? but it may not be very audible ?
all i hear is a very quiet two or three little clicks ?

ive ordered some removal clips which should arrive hopefully before the weekend and then wel see

otherwise ( and if the scrappies cannt help) il be looking for a replacement unit .   i was hoping for a reply on here from dave dnd but didnt get one so messaged him at dnd services . he says he cannot help !

so
fired it up on the kitchen table . the cartidge opens up and the laser / arm moves into each section in steps to check for a disc. as dg said it would.
the discs spin and you can hear some laser movement ?    so it look like it is the usual laser problem.

one more thing to ask curiosity wise .
the plugs on the back (std iso) have the section populated that on a single din unit would be to accept the square blue connector from a remote cd changer ( eg blaupunkt 10disc unit )
are these wired into the car and if so for what purpose ?
