I'd be interested to know just why you're considering spending that much on it. Genuine reason for asking with reference to my Astra.

That's a pretty effective way of burning through about £2,500 :-\

Interesting comments....

The work has already been done to a high standard, but not by me.

The car was sold in May for £750  (only 29,000 miles) but no MOT and much work required. It was purchased by a very fastidious pensioner with plenty of time on his hands.....a genuinely nice fella.

Now all the work has been done he is on to his next project.

He has offered the car back to me for £2500......which, of course, is ridiculous for a 2003 Corsa 1.2SXI, but I just wonder if it could make sense bearing in mind the low mileage and the work that has been done.

He tells me the MOT man says it is the best one he has ever seen. :)

He's obviously not interested in making any money on the deal, as I would think the £1750 he has spent on it wouldn't cover much in labour charges.
What would you do with it if you bought it? Surely Mrs Opti wouldn't be interested in using it as a daily driver? If you really want it, buy it, but not to just sit around not being used.

Now....the reason I asked. I keep threatening to throw my Astra in the bin, because it looks a bit neglected and has done nearly 80,000 miles. Even in good nick, I would only get about £3000 for it. It's a 66 plate, 1.6, auto, diesel in red.
But.....I actually enjoy driving it and the engine and gearbox are fine. It certainly pulls a lot better than all of these modern 1.5's. To make it look reasonable (not a full re spray, a good tidy up) would cost around a grand, I reckon. New infotainment screen, fitted locally, maybe £250. I think I would then have a half decent astra which would probably do me for another three years.
The cost of replacing it with something similar but a few years younger would be around £10K, that's a lot for a mobile dog kennel/shopping trolley.

Why does your Astra need a partial respray? Is it car park damage? I get the new display.

We are having similar thoughts with our 14 Golf but it has 125 k miles. Bodywork is fine. Going to stick with it until we have moved house.

Not much, but it has had a family connection from almost  new.....so more for that really.

Always been a great little car though. I once managed to pull an indicated 112 MPH on a 'deserted road' at 3 a.m  ::). Vauxhall claim 106 MPH so probably about right if we allow for speedo error.

The used car market is totally arse backwards at the moment...

You can't buy anything remotely newish for less than an arm and both kidneys, yet even clean slightly older used cars are apparently worthless. That said, it could be an idea to get the Astra upto snuff and keep it rather than trying to replace it with something that is, in reality, only marginally better :-\

The Corsa makes no sense from a short term profit point of view, but equally, if you have the cash spare and it means something to you, then why not, after all, it may well appreciate in due course.

Even the most mundane motor from the seventies and eighties go for more than you might imagine. Probably due to nostalgia.

Bangers and cash sold a basic 2 litre Mk4 Cortina recently. I believe it made around £15,000. :o :o :o :o
