I remember reading about this and watching the video of it many, many, many years ago. Ole Ringstad actually drove it many miles to the test track and back home again. He was so laid back about the whole thing and said that a damp track prevented him from giving it full chat. He even let the interviewer have a go. 
Something not many of us would think about was that he had temperature gauges on the diff, as the high speed got the diff oil so hot.
