Nissan Cumquot
« on: 27 February 2025, 16:18:01 »

Petrol, possibly '68.

Poor cold starting followed by stalling upto temperature.

Full Nissan history from new.

Recently been in to investigate and found that the thermostat casing had split. Fixed and highlighted a misfire. All plugs found to be heavily fouled and replaced and car returned only to suffer poor starting again.

I suspect that the thermostat housing contains a coolant temp sensor and as the coolant dropped it misonformed the ECU causing it to over or under fuel. Resulting in the non starting and misfiring.

Is the above a reasonable diagnosis?

Three weeks later and the thermostat housing has failed again.

Zackly.

Neither the dealer that did the work and the dealer that currently have the car should be selling more than fruit.

The dealer that has the car seems to be working on the basis that Nissan will be gone by the end of March, and the dealer that did the work couldn't actually give a flying turd.

Both basically left my cousin stranded with little more than a pat on the head and only actually started to do anything when I got involved.

I'm hoping that by the time I land in Lundun tomorrow Nissan had managed to smack some sense into them... Otherwise the first thing I tow with the Proper car is going to be the Cumquot >:(

Could be two unrelated issues?

To me, hard starting and stalling when up to temp could signal poor or erratic fuel supply. Has anyone done a pressure test at the rail? I would potentially be looking at fuel filters and pump(s). Someone smarter than me will probably be able to say for sure but I would have thought a failed sensor like that would throw at least a code for the sensor itself and then an 'implausible value' code or similar.

Second failure of the housing suggests it was a) fitted by a gorilla or b) never changed at all... >:(

PS. the first thing I did on seeing this thread was google 1968 Nissan Cumquot   :D

All bets are off with Nissan.  A mate's missus had a Nissan Puke with the 1.5 soot chucker, and started having DPF issues.  Turns out, it was the element in one of the door mirrors or something equally random...

I mean, WTF???

I'll ask them to check the mirrors, although an impressive coolant leak is unlikely to be related to them.

But, it is a rebadges Renault from Packem land.

My uncle ordered it new and sold it to my cousin when he bought his next one.

It's possibly the least abused example on the road.

His first Note wouldn't have been my suggestion, but he was happy with the price and service from their local Nissan dealer and every time they've bought a new car since it's been from the same dealer.

Had he gone to Nissan St Albans then, he'd probably still be driving Volvos.

I wonder if Uncle STEMO has thought of a Nissan Qashqai?  Seems the ideal car for him!  :)
