BMW 530D autobox limp mode.
« on: 30 August 2008, 01:29:08 »

sport auto touring estate, e39  i think,120k.
its my mates. Always immaculate with his cars full Md history, the slightest fault and hes on it like the plague, until about a month ago it started missfireing as he put it. I rode with him while he made it do it, cruising at 60 odd, up a very slight hill, just tickle the gas and... Nothing i could not feel what he was on about at all. Then on 2nd attempt... there, feel that, he said. It felt like bumps to me, like if it did it badly enough you might hit your head on the roof, but as it was, i said gearbox, as if its trying to change gear, up and down very quickly, or maybe down them up, so as to feel like a bumpy road. It was not making you nod your head forward as if a momentory loss of power, But lifting the car, well, like the road was bumpy. It wasnt, just one bump, not 2 as a  bump met first the front then the rear set of wheels as a bump would be hit normally,
b bum style. It was not the road, just bum, as if the car hit a bump with the rear wheels only, its rear wheel drive.
He was sure its a missfire and knows a phew in the trade, so changed all manor of pumps and filters in the fuel injection system that runs at a massive 40bar, to no availe.
Then saw him down the pub tonight and enquired. Gear box is in limp mode, its locked in 4th gear, it made a shush shush metal rubbing sound for a day and packed up.
Atf was done by a trusted dealer a phew months ago, apart from the above hes never had a problem with it.

Did BM have anything to do with the Omega boxs? Is there any similarity? Does anybody know out about BMs?

latest is the box is buggerd, hes been quoted £1300 for a recon box. Does anyone know a better solution. Dont know why/what the problems is tho. thats the trouble. Had the atf done 4 months ago, no problems just a service. And now its buggerd, and the level was NOT  low either at any point. Makes me wonder if they put the right oil in, or if the chip has made the engine to powerfull for the gear box? Or something else? He did mention damage to the oil cooler at the front. I wonder if its blocked and causing it to over heat? Anyone know out about these? Cheers

This seems a very lonely thread. Unfortunately I can't offer any technical advice.
If it was me I'd be putting in A N Other gearbox rather than fork out £1300 for a recon ........ this is coming from someone who paid £987 for his Senator's gearbox to be recon'd  :-[  :y

They did use the 4L30E (Ar35) box....in the 5 series E39 on certain engines (including the 2.5!).....worth double checking thogh as they mixed and matched any boxes they laid there hands on at the time!

well hes got it back,  £1400 in the end. :o They said the box is a   Gm5L40E. A1 premier transmissions did the work. The report, oppsed lock up clutch over heating the oil and fried the box. The driver said they have seen them go at 40k and the GM made box was chocolate. The best thing you can do with them is keep them cool, they hate heat.

So may mate is fairly sure a combination of chiping it towing two 1000cc bikes on a trailer at ahem, "speed"  and wheel spinning starts and bruntingthorpe airfield have exceeded the box stress level. The oil was badly burnt and in the end had no drive at all. Thanks for the replies tho. All sorted now. Cheers

Do you know the max torque rating for that box? Maybe we can de tune it to within limits? He wont like that idea though.

well, it "was" sorted, he got the car back, first journey up to Cadwell park with bike and trailer, got as far as the m25 and the box sh@ itself all up lane 1 and the hard shoulder.3/4 litres of atf on the floor before he could get out of the car. Blown a pipe off or something. Towed back home, car back to garage to be repaired.
He was talking again about cleaning a big lump of oily mess of the oil cooler, i reckon its restricting the flow myself.
