"New" engine - what I need to update DVLA?
« on: 10 September 2008, 12:40:49 »

I have recently purchased a second hand engine for my car. Engine installed in this car is knackered and I have to replace it. I received an invoice for new engine, with mileage etc, but can’t find engine number on it.
I know that I have to inform DVLA about engine replacement, but it it enough to provide invoice and engine number from engine block or do I have to ask the company to send engine number certificate?
Thanks in advance.

If your V5 does not have the current engine number on it, then I personally wouldn't worry about it.  If it does have the engine number, its usually stamped on the passenger side of the block next to where the engine bolts to the gearbox.

It only gets technical if you change the capacity, so go from say a 2.5 V6 to a 3.0 V6.

I bought the same engine: 2.5 to 2.5. Same year etc. This is not a problem.
Yes, there is engine number on V5. I know that my new engine is legal (bought it from a company), but I am concerned about next MOT. If the engine is a “spare part” and it is not a scope of MOT then I don’t want to inform DVLA.
It’s a Vectra Design but it’s worth mention that it’s 2.5 petrol but it says “Vectra Design Edition DTI” so I wouldn’t be surprised if the engine number is wrong as well…
Funny thing is that the old one did 54k miles when died. I bought it like that, with full service history so mileage is genuine. I think that a valve felt into combustion chamber. For the moment I got pieces of piston and valve from oil sump.  I don’t know why but I know that prior to this disaster there was a knocking noise and somebody took plenum and rocker covers out. Why? That’s a good question. All I could think of is that cambelt failed, was fixed but new valves weren’t locked properly (or spring got broken). After a time it got worse and then valve felt inside…

It will only get to be a problem if the Police try to identify the vehicle on the engine number and get the wrong result, I reckon. Chuck the new engine in, drive it around for a few months and then send the V5 off to get it changed if it looks like a good'un.

You  might need to take it to a DVLA office to get it inspected, chances are they'll just update the V5 and send it back.

There must be loads of cars running around on the wrong engine numbers though.

It might be funny but I cant find any number anywhere on both engines. I have found flat space next to gearbox bolting but there are no numbers on both.

Interesting, TIS states this though which might give some clues:

Quote
On installation of a short-block, the engine number must be embossed in the cylinder block before installation.

A large "R" (2) must be embossed at a distance from the engine number to identify the engine short-block.

Which sudgests a new short block comes without an engine number.....

As there is no engine number, is there any way to check what cam belt kit I have to buy? As far as I remember there were different models for Omegas and Vectras during production.

A very rough guide is to look at the oil filter type, paper is generally the later type.

In realitys, you can always swap the tensioner and idler to the old back plate if you get the wrong one because the belt length etc is all the same.

Thanks again.
And two more things I’d like to ask you.
- Oil level dip stick pipe needs to be replaced, but I can’t pull it out. I tried turning it but without any success. What’s the easiest way to take it out?
-I want to replace crankshaft seals (mainly front one). Is it very difficult or do I just have to take the pulley out?

If like for like doesnt need to be noted, but if the cc has changed, you'll also need to call your insurance  :(

Ahh.. very rare Model Vectra you have there!

Let me guess... is the car: Black, Has every extra fitted to it - climate control / xenons / 4x Electric Windows + sunroof etc (Prob no cruise control though), a lush cream leather interior, champaign limited edition alloys, Little sticker in the middle of the back bumper, W/X reg?  :y

I had one (the DTi - diesel pump was dead, fitted 2 second hand pump, which were dead too, so sold the car as a non runner!)

Nice Trim Model, Top Spec, and only 1000 made I think.  :P
