Crippling student loan debt won't help matters.

Not real debt because in reality you only have to pay it back when you are in work. The less you earn the less you need to pay. No job and you pay SFA. Most student loans are not paid in full.

Unlike debt on a house or car, where they generally don't care if you have a job, or not. They are quite happy to take your car and house away.

Doctors and dentists soon get to a point where they are paying it, nurses too given their pay rises...

And when you spend 7 or 8 years accruing it, the debt burden takes a while to chomp through.

You very seldom 'chomp through'. My lad is on plan2, and the interest charged each year is RPI+3%. It's more likely to increase every year than fall.

Best thing he can do is to get a side job and plough every penny into paying it off as soon as possible.

No. You don't get a side job when you work in his job.

Mind you I’ve seen (if it’s correct) dentists earnings are set to rise from £130 per hour to £150 per hour.
