All that will happen is majority of high mileage users will seek odometer corrections :-X

Which means that if it's only £250, then they are still being £350 in pocket compared with ICE drivers,

20,000 miles per annum will cost you £600

Who's going to admit to doing 20,000 miles though if it's down to the drivers to estimate their mileage?  ???

The Government will soon discover that most EV's are just runabouts doing two or three thousand miles a year.  ::)  ;D

I'm pretty sure it won't take them long to figure it out. But it's something that will never affect me.  :)

They can monitor "Genuine"  mileage through the MOT.

Down side means they wont know the details for the 1st 3 years.  So they will simply just relay on drivers honestly. ::)

They've got until 2028 to figure out a way to ensure honesty doesn't come into it.

I suspect that this what will happen at some point.  Shortly after your MOT you'll get your tax bill in the post.  ::)

Or more likely the tax you owe will pop up on your Digital Starmercard ID account and the cash will be taken automatically from your bank account. No ifs. No buts.

And if you haven't got the cash in your bank your EV will be remotely disabled until you can pony up, along with a deposit for next year. Plus interest of course.  ::)

All new cars are connected, so they might mandate it updates the mileage every month/3 months whatever.  Obviously that brings privacy concerns, so it'll all get delayed a decade, and you've tanked EV sales even further....

Regardless of this particular policy, I'm amazed that this government really cannot see the link between taxation and (dis)incentivising people to do things.

We have a productivity failing in this country, so we need people to work more. Government solution: increase tax on work and increase benefits for those that don't work.

Want more people to drive EVs. Great, let's increase the tax on them.  ::)

I applaud this policy, and I know how to disconnect the odometer on all my cars :-)

The Govt currently raises £25bn per year from petrol and diesel taxes. If (say) 50% of cars are electric or plug in hybrid by 2030 then that's a loss of £12Bn to the treasury. By 2040 it'll be closer to the full £25Bn since the only ones still using dinosaur juice will be those of us still driving classic cars. Something has to be done to plug that gap in funding. We may or may not like whatever they propose, but at least they have realised there is a looming issue, and are thinking about how to deal with it.

An interesting point has been raised on the skiing forums. Dover to the Alps and back is (roughly) 1200 miles, depending on destination. At 3p/mile thats £36. All those miles will show on your odometer, none of them are in the UK, but are you still going to get charged by HMRC?

That will be one of the intricacies of the 3000 page report which will be needed prior to implementation.

Reeves and co say Labour has 'fairness' at the heart of every policy.

People pay a huge amount of tax on every gallon of petrol.....so surely milk float owners should also suffer. >:D

Of course, she could 'level the playing field' by removing most of the tax on petrol and derv, but that will never happen.
