Bit of a rant, I suppose.

I helped a friend out back in 2015. She was always broke and had a young child, so I helped her here and there. But she did pay me back in full.

Later, she pawned a bracelet and some rings (all 9k gold). She couldn’t afford to buy them back from the pawn shop and asked me to step in and help. I ended up buying them back on my card after getting copies of the two pawn invoices (£200 + £120). Absolute robbing gits — they charged her around 150–151% interest on the items.

Now, 10–11 years later, she still can’t afford to pay me back and I haven't heard from her for years. I’ve rung around jewellery shops to check the 9k gold spot price and was shocked at the offers. Prices ranged from about £31.40 per gram to £32.80, with others coming in at £29.50 and £33.50 — all over the place.

While looking at the websites, I also noticed .999 silver bar prices vary wildly too. People are paying well over the odds just for brand names and fancy packaging. Pure silver is pure silver at the end of the day.

I fully understand the supply versus demand situation and expended £2 to maybe £5 a gram difference and yes of course dealers overheads.

This is just a mention on one item.

But when you compare the comparison sites for this Flights and Hotels that are all cheaper than booking direct.

Price of precious metals has increased due to economy instability, bless our Rachael.  That's nothing unusual. Bro, RIP, used to stock up on gold when prices were depleted, and sell when the economy tanked

If using those stupid websites where you send them your gold, expect to be butt raped, and deservedly so for being so stupid.  Take the items to a proper, independent jeweller, or better still, take them to Hatton Garden - in both cases, you will likely need photo ID (anti fraud/launder, blah blah)

Totally agree regards the postal service.

These are just our local jewelry shops.

A friend has worked in the Silver for the last 35 years pr so and over the years I have learned a lot and also bought quite a lot of clocks and picture frames as presents.

I am aware the Birmingham Gold/Jewelry quarter and have monitored prices for a while.

The Best price in the quarter is .25p more than local shops so not worth the 4 hour round trip.

Looked at Hatton Garden prices but for the distance and time taken etc Then Birmingham and Wolverhampton are just as competitive.

The stuff I have may fetch £900 but with the stones then I dont know if the price may increase due to resale or decrease because they may be considered as scrap only

I do have the details of the weights and stones as a guideline.

Also, as I sort through things, I’ve come across some sequential £5 paper notes, coins like the early 50p and £1, and the old 3d coins. I also seem to have most of the different designs of the round £1 coins.

There’s an oil-filter box full of old halfpennies and similar coins.

It’s all getting sorted, but it may all be scrap or, at best, face value. I have a flyer from a market trader who buys gold, silver, medallions, and coinage, etc. He offers around 50% of the value of old coins and notes.

Even found a 5 bob coin still in its sleve.

Some Postoffices (certainly only a handful) will take old notes (not sure about coins) and pay into your bank account at full value - has to be paid into an account, or needs photo ID etc.

I found a load of out of date £20s in a suitcase we rarely used, and did that.  For me, it had to be Oxford (no thanks!) or Birmingham - PO website will tell you your nearest, and probably what they will and won't take.

we have a crown like this that my Mum was given as a kid .... my Grand dad mythered her to bank it but she refused.

Son spent about a grand on a new metal detector about a year ago.
A few months ago while detecting in a local field that we used to walk the kids around when they were young, he found a George third gold Sovereign in almost mint condition.
Worth around two grand.
He found two Elizabeth 1st silver hammered coins on the same field yesterday.
Looks like the metal detector was a wise investment.

Always fancied a metal detector, even more after watching tv programs like gold rush and Austrailian gold.

Very interesting how the set the units for sensitivity.

Would love to go to the states or Aussie land and detect or pan for gold, even go see and have a bash at opal mining.

Yep...6d was the old tanner, and 2/6d was half a crown. There was also a 10/-(50p) note that was pink-ish in colour.

All long before my time, of course.

My only claim to fane is an 1899 'big old penny' with Vicky on it. I think she only lasted a couple more years.

Old money to decimal currency was  a BIG com..

As a kid we used to get our pocket money and wander off to the sweet shop - one of my favs were the chocolate mice for 1/2d each.

so old money 20 bob x 12d =240 then x 2 (1/2d) so 480 mice to £1

wasn't long once decimal the mice were 1/2p each and losing 280 mice per £

Since then the mice just got smaller like Quality street tins and Toblerone/wagon wheels etc
