Two year MOT

Just been reading in the local rag that there are moves afoot to change the MOT interval to two years.
Sounds crazy to me, if implemented I can see the test being that strict that only a new car will pass it. Otherwise two years of motoring between tests and what will some of the cars on the road be like?

Bound to be longer, more indepth and cost twice as much too.  Folks with bangers just won't bother and where will that leave the road safety. Barmy.  >:(

Cant see what advantage would be gained.......changing it to six months,maybe :o

I must be getting old. I sometimes put mine in a couple of months early, just so I know its all OK :-[

No i dont think so.

It is already 2 years in France and some other European countries.

The argument that was put forward is that cars are now built better, do not rust the way that they used to and generally remain roadworthy longer.

That seems to make sense to me. Am i an in favour of a 2 year test after a car is 3 year old ? NO!

I still think an awful lot can occur in 2 years . Tyres, brakes, brake lines etc etc

We shall see

Agreed, cars are built better and dont rust away, unless they are omegas :D

Personally speaking, I would be in favour of a 2 year mot. It is up to the individual motorist to ensure their car is roadworthy at all times in my opinion. I run a couple of classic cars and the mot is mostly a formality as I check my cars on a regular basis. All of my cars have passed their mot's first time for the last few years and it would save me upwards of £150 per year  :)
As with anything in life, there will be those that abuse it and won't check their car from one mot until the next.

I'm against this totally, if anything I think the test should be a lot more in depth and harder to pass. Regarding the price, if the test becomes really strict and a bit more expensive...so what? It's your, mine and everyone's safety, and that's priceless!

The MOT only checks safety-realted and emission issues, and as such I can't see how it could be more 'strict'?

They check tyres, brakes, streering, suspension, lights, wipers, emissions etc...

If by strict they mean that MOT stations will be more tightly regulated so they can't 'pass' unroadworthy cars, or more stringent checks regarding the cars true identity etc, then OK. But otherwise what does 'strict' mean? What saftey-related features will they be checking that are'nt being checked now?
