Like YZ, my current usage means I could get away with an EV a fair chunk of the time, but UK breaks away - or even foreign hoidays if going from places like Gatwick - would put me in the realms of having to stop, wait for a charger to become free (anyone ever using the non-Tesla chargers are Oxford services will know exactly that problem, so around an hour wait, then another 30-45m to charge) and pay public charging rates....

It simply doesn't work for me.

Everyone I know who first gets an EV becomes an evangelist about it, and tries to persuade everyone to switch.  I think it's telling that 5 years ago, most of houses in my road had at least one EV. Now none do.

If an EV works for you, I think given the physics of the motor, they are a near ideal form of moving a car around, particularly around town and slower roads.  Its far less suited to motorways and long journeys, particularly if you detest overpriced crap service station coffee.

Even at £8.40 for a gallon of diesel, as it is now, getting around 53mpg still makes it preferable to charging at a public charger, with all the faff that entails.

Even the most avid EV evangelist will accept that public charging and EV is more expensive than using petrol or diesel.

Or they simply don't charge at home and have access to free and unlimited charging at work... I still firmly believe that this should be taxable or companies offering it should also offer free fuel to every employee so as not to discriminate.

I can think of one EV owner we both know who has bought into the concept but has done so as part of a bigger picture. Obviously he's done his homework, sought out a very particular example and the manmaths obviously works for him and his needs, as opposed to someone who's simply jumped head first onto the band wagon ;)

Yep.....too expensive to charge a milk float at 80p for each KW. But if you don't travel more than 250 miles in a day, and return home, it's 20p for each KW (full price) provided you have a home charger.

If you don't use a proper petrol car instead. One with a creamy straight 6. :y

I will always prefer a powerful petrol engine to a glorified milk float, but free charging at work makes it work for me.

I'm not sure that what you do counts as employment  >:D

It's like an elderly aunt that gives you an allowance and in exchange, you visit periodically and consume all her tea and biscuits before having a nap on the sofa ready to head home again... ;D

Whenever I see Camilla she reminds me of the ' batty mad aunt' who would have been locked in the attic and forgotten about in years gone by. :)

That sums it up pretty well to be fair. Although I do have to supply my own biscuits. ;D
I think it balances out across my working life though. I did almost thirty years of physical graft before I ended up in this job, so swings & roundabouts.
It could be argued that if I had listened more at school (or even bothered to turn up half the time) I might not have had to do physical jobs until I was too breaked up to do it any more, but thats a different conversation for another day.  :)
