Ah.....another misrepresentation of an old adage.

People used to tell porkies or pork pies. Now they tell porky pies. Not quite the same.
People used to spit feathers because they were thirsty, now they do it when they're angry, apparently.
And people used to resent a remark. Some wag decided to use 'represent' that remark instead, quite witty. Now it's resemble that remark. Not quite so witty.

It certainly is a warm one, it’s even uncomfortably stuffy in the shade. I missed the hot summer of 2022, when the fields were self combusting, thatch roofs were self igniting and the roads were melting, but I heard about it from visiting family. This heat just drains you.

Hottest June day ever....breaking the record from 1976.

36.1C as opposed to 35.6C in 76.

So 50 years to break the previous record.  The climate Blok from the BBC will keep quiet I'm sure, as he normally says this will happen every 10 minutes...

I remember 76. I think I might qualify for counselling and maybe even compensation. ;D

I did a very busy special stage rallying season in my Cooper S. I couldn’t get any more power on my budget without busting the 1300 cc capacity. My sense of fair play ruled that out. The only thing left was Lightening the car. Alloy , fibreglass etc. out went the heater/fan. Opening windows ( except for a small Perspex circle on co driver door. Not the best of environments. ;D

I have very fond memories of the summer of 76 (despite being in hospital for a long time at the end of it) I was 16 and loved the heat.
Now I hate the heat with a passion. Would much rather have a cold Winters day than the 35 degrees we had here today.
Even the little Tortoise spend most of it hiding under a sheet of plywood to escape the direct sun.
If this is going to carry on through the summer I may well invest in an indoor A/C unit.

I cant get my head around the summer of 76 being 50 years ago. I remember it like it was last week and it just doesnt seem possible.

Was the race category limit 1300cc?  My Austin 1300GT (1275cc) engine was faster than my 1275GT mini clubman. It required the front engine mounts to be chopped and swapped over but otherwise it fitted. Other alternative would have been a Radford 1380cc but that would have been over the category limit and probably over budget.  :-\  I used to run a GT with torque-master inlet manifold and Weber carb instead of SU’s, with a tubular LCB exhaust system feeding twin exit centre tail pipes. I had the advantage of Oselli Engineering not being far from me, and them guys knew how to set up mini engines.  :y

Class was 1300cc. I suspect that some folk stroked and/ or over bored engines 7 or 8 % more power. Looking back no one would have checked. The S engines would reliably run higher revs than the 1275GT engines.
They sure were easier to maintain. I had a good friend, John Denis from Peterborough, in the same class. On the Cambrian he retired after the Great Orme. My rad sprang a leak. We “ hot” swapped his for mine at the end of the stage.

Fun cars back in the day.  :y
I owned quite a few back then, the Cooper S, the 850cc, the 1000cc Clubman Traveller, the 1275GT with the 11 stud cylinder head engine swap and an old mini van that smoked like a bastard when you lifted off due to the valve stem rubbers riding up and down on the stems.   ;D
The 850cc used to raise a smile. It had extended wheel arches with Wolfrace alloys, 4 Cibie Super Oscars (2 up/2 down) and dark tinted windows. It looked the business and lads wanted to race it, not realising that it did 75mph flat out down hill.
